Willie Nelson Tells Apple Music About New Album ‘First Rose of Spring’, Says He’s Working on Another Frank Sinatra Covers Record, and Offers an Update on Potential Snoop Dogg Collaboration

Willie Nelson

The legendary Willie Nelson joins Zane Lowe on Apple Music to discuss his new album ‘First Rose of Spring’. He discusses songwriting, living through challenging times, being an independent spirit, working with his heroes, collaborating with Chris Stapleton and shares his favorite songwriters (Hank Williams, Kris Kristofferson, and Billy Joe Shaver). He also tells Apple Music he’s working on a Frank Sinatra cover record and new book with his sister and his friendship with Snoop Dogg, their possible new collaboration, and who could out-smoke who.

Willie Nelson Tells Apple Music About His Favorite Writers (Hank Williams, Kris Kristofferson, Billy Joe Shaver)…

“Well, Hank Williams was my favorite for years and year. He only lived to be 29 years old, but he wrote fantastic poetry. I used to do a show. I used to open for Ray Price all the time when I was a young guy. And I’d go out and I would tell Little Jimmy Dickens jokes and sing Hank Williams songs for 30 minutes or an hour. And I really enjoyed doing Hank Williams. And of course, since Hank Williams, there have been some other good writers. Kris Kristofferson, don’t forget that boy. He has had probably more number one hits songs than anybody. Billy Joe Shaver, kind of an unknown writer, but one of the greatest ones out there. And Waylon did a whole album on Billy Joe Shaver songs. So there’s just some great writers out there that probably the people aren’t as aware off as they are Hank Williams or me.”
