Willie Nelson Releases Boisterous Call To Action, “Vote ‘Em Out”

Willie Nelson has released “Vote ‘Em Out,” an urgent exhortation to citizens everywhere to use the most powerful tool at their disposal. As Nelson sings it, in our democracy, the right to vote is hard-won, sacred and puts the reins of power in the hands of the people:

“The biggest gun we’ve got
Is called the ballot box
So if you don’t like who’s in there
Vote ’em out….”

Nelson premiered “Vote ‘Em Out” live on September 29 at a rally in Austin, TX for Beto O’Rourke, who’s currently running as the Democratic Party nominee in the 2018 Texas U.S. Senate race against incumbent Ted Cruz. As USA Today noted, the crowd estimated at 55,000+ “was boisterous all night, but reached its highest volume when Nelson debuted a new song to mark the occasion titled “Vote ‘Em Out”.” Willie introduced the song, saying “Here’s a new song I wanna spring on y’all tonight. Take it home with you and spread it around.” The response to the song was immediate as fans, as well as news and media outlets, did indeed spread it around. Moveon.org tweeted video of the performance, calling it their “favorite song of the election season” and the video was picked up far and wide including CNN, Newsweek, ABC News, FoxNews, The Guardian, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and scores more. In addition, Willie was recently confirmed to perform the track on an upcoming episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! meant to air in advance of the midterm elections.

Following close on the heels of the September 14 release of Willie’s My Way album, “Vote ‘Em Out” is Willie’s response to the current political zeitgeist. While My Way was a fond look back with Willie paying tribute to Frank Sinatra, one his favorite singers, biggest influences and friends, “Vote ‘Em Out” is very much grounded in the present and looking to the future. Written with and produced by longtime collaborator Buddy Cannon, the song finds Willie, joined by sons Lukas and Micah, demanding that every citizen exercise their right to vote in the impending 2018 midterm elections.

Willie encourages everyone to vote this coming November and also to support and learn more about the organization RAICES. RAICES is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost legal services to underserved immigrant children, families, and refugees in Texas. https://www.raicestexas.org/
