New & Noteworthy: Lena Stone

Lena Stone has been building her career as a songwriter, penning breakthrough songs for other up-and-coming country females (Kalie Shorr’s “Fight Like A Girl,” “He’s Just Not That Into You,” and Kasey Tyndall’s “Everything Is Texas”). But now, it’s her turn to take the spotlight. She grew up in Carlisle, Massachusetts and at age 18, she packed up and moved to Nashville to pursue a career in music. Lena immediately jumped into the songwriting community, spending several years as a staff writer at Song Factory Publishing.

Lena helped develop Song Suffragettes, a weekly songwriters night at Nashville’s Listening Room Cafe, spotlighting the newest and brightest women in country music.  As a co-anchor of the show for more than 2 years, she’s had an opportunity that hundreds of Nashville songwriters crave: a chance to build a dedicated fan base while honing her songwriting and performing skills.

Her current single is “Can’t Think Straight,” which was released in the fall of 2017.

I really wanted to write a song that felt like the summer I was 18, when I fell in love for the first time, got my heart broken for the first time, and moved from my hometown to Nashville. It was such a crazy and beautiful summer and I wanted a song that would take me back to that place and time whenever I played it. I really hope that no matter what someone’s been through, “Can’t Think Straight” sparks a memory in them and reminds them how magical first love is, even after it ends.

And now, you can watch that emotion unfold in the recently released video.

Since the production of “Can’t Think Straight” is so pop-influenced, I really wanted to try a version that was more acoustic and intimate, so I got all the guys who played on the record back in the studio and we recorded a live version…and filmed it! With purple lighting and a fog machine, of course!

The song will be part of her debut EP, which comes out May 11.

Get to know CMTT’s New & Noteworthy artist Lena Stone:

Current Single / Project: “Can’t Think Straight”

Musical influences:

My favorite artist of all time is James Taylor, because I grew up on his music and that’s how I learned about songwriting and storytelling.  (Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Dionne Warwick were some of the other amazing artists my parents raised me on).  Being a 90s baby, I obviously loved the pop stars and boy bands of the late 90s, and my first CD was Baby One More Time by Britney Spears! When I got a little older and started exploring music on my own, I fell in love with singer/songwriters like Sara Bareilles and Matt Nathanson.  And when I first heard “Baby Girl” by Sugarland, country music completely stole my heart (that was right around when Carrie Underwood won American Idol, and just a few years before Taylor Swift released “Tim McGraw” and became my hero).

Personal influences:

My grandma is one of the most special people on the entire planet…she is so full of love and music and I want to be her when I grow up!  She has spent her whole life making music both professionally (she was a music therapist) and for fun, and I know that’s at the heart of my love for music.
Darrell Brown (songwriter, “You’ll Think Of Me” “Why Don’t We Just Dance”) actually had a huge impact on me even though he probably has no idea! He was a mentor at the music camp I attended in high school (Grammy Camp, run by the Grammy Foundation) for the songwriters, and when I played him my songs he suggested I look into moving to Nashville after I graduated high school.  At the time, Nashville wasn’t even on my radar because I’m from New England and I didn’t know anyone who had moved to Tennessee, but I ended up visiting and falling in love with the city and the country music community, and the rest is history!

Music sounds like: Kelsea Ballerini, Mickey Guyton, Carly Pearce

Why you should be listening: Lena’s voice is like a warm breeze in early summer, delivering fond memories that hint at being bittersweet.
