American Idol Still Has a Little Country

Who would have imagined that when Scotty McCreery was a kid he would impersonate Elvis Presley? In a pre-produced piece on last night’s “American Idol,” his parents dug out photos of little Scotty in full Elvis-mode in a white jumpsuit, black wig and sunglasses straight out of the Las Vegas years. Back to present day, the judges loved Scotty’s version of the Travis Tritt song, “Can I Trust You With My Heart?” Lauren Alaina, who sang a Shania Twain song last week, has the flu now. But it didn’t seem to get in the way of her performance. She added a little country flavor to the Melissa Etheridge hit, “I’m The Only One.”

Who are your favorites  on American Idol this year?

Hank Williams Jr. Brings Out His Rowdy Friends for Popcorn Sutton’s Tennessee White Whiskey Launch

Hank Williams Jr,’s stellar collection of rowdy friends reads like a music business “who’s who” of famous faces – many of them on hand last night to raise a glass to Hank’s personal launch of Popcorn Sutton’s Tennessee White Whiskey.

That “smooth going down” taste is courtesy of the secret recipe blend of the late immortalized legend of Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton – forever enshrined by his death last year as the last of a dying breed of authentic mountain men and makers of marvelous moonshine.

Keeping “Popcorn’s” legend alive will be entrusted to Hank Jr. – a man who appreciates good liquor and respects the free spirited souls of mountain men. Hank Jr. is a business partner (not a paid endorsee) with J&M Concepts and Pam Sutton.

Hank’s friends on hand to celebrate the launch included Kid Rock, Martina McBride, Zac Brown, Colt Ford, Travis Tritt, Eddie Montgomery, Josh Thompson, Jamey Johnson, Randy Houser, Tanya Tucker, Lee Brice, Rodney Atkins, the Kentucky Headhunters, Little Big Town, The Grascals, The Roys, Little Texas, Two Foot Fred, Ira Dean and Heidi Newfield.

The new whiskey will begin in Middle Tennessee and move local bars and retail to region availability. It has a “limited edition” quality in that each batch is made by hand.

Ironic in view of its original origins with Popcorn Sutton’s life outside the reach of “the law” the brand will be the first “white whiskey” to be approved by the federal government.

Although Hank never had the privilege of shaking Popcorn Sutton’s hand in real life he attended his memorial service on October 24, 2009, in Danridge, Tennessee near Knoxville. He was admirer of the legendary moonshine runner.

“He was the last of the real mountain moonshiners that went back,” noted Hank.
“Popcorn was part of the real ‘Thunder Road’ legend, and that is a real part of country music history.”

Travis Tritt Has a New Role in “Fishers of Men”

Travis Tritt is currently in Georgia shooting scenes for a new movie, ”Fishers of Men.”  Travis will play the role of  Eddie Waters.

Crews set up for scenes at the old Cairo, GA county jail on Friday.

“Travis is obviously very excited to play the role. We’ve been talking to him off and on over the past few days about it,” says the director of the film, Joshua Mills. “And it’s definitely created a buzz around here. He’s got a huge fan base in country music as well as the south.”

The production staff first considered Sam Elliot and Alan Jackson before choosing Travis Tritt for the role.  “Fishers of Men” will be released sometime in January.

Travis Tritt Opens His Own Record Label

Another country singer is parting ways with their record label and launching their own.  According to Billboard.com, Travis Tritt is launching his own label to regain control of his career.  However, unlike Toby Keith’s label, Travis won’t be signing other artists.

It’s strictly gonna be me — I don’t have any partners whatsoever on the creative end, just from a financial standpoint,” Tritt explains. “I feel like I’ve got enough experience over the years. I know what it takes to put a record together, so I’m not looking for people to come in and shape it.” Tritt plans to start working on a new album in earnest once the label is off the ground but says that he’s “always on the lookout for material” and has been talking to James Otto and Leroy Parnell about doing some songwriting with him.

Travis’ last release, The Storm, was in 2007.
