Montgomery Gentry and Tom T. Hall Kick Off Road to Fame Competition

Montgomery Gentry

At a press conference held at the Kentucky State Capital on January 31, Governor Steve Beshear, Country Music Highway committee members, TourSEKY members and Country Music Hall of Fame Member Tom T. Hall announced the launch of two initiatives designed to attract attention to Eastern Kentucky’s famed “Country Music Highway” (U.S. Route 23), which has given rise to a remarkable number of country artists such as Loretta Lynn, Ricky Skaggs, The Judds, Billy Ray Cyrus, Patty Loveless, Tom T. Hall and many more. These initiatives are a talent competition called the “Country Music Highway Road to Fame” and the “Country Music Highway Arts Education Fund,” which will provide funding and educational opportunities to cash-strapped music and arts programs for schools in the area.

This Wednesday, February 15, Kentucky-raised Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry of the duo Montgomery Gentry (whose hometown-proud hit “Where I Come From” is currently headed to the top of the music charts) will deliver a special message via video. Country Music Hall of Fame member Tom T. Hall will make a rare “homecoming” appearance in support of the initiative. Hall, who was born and began his long career as a singer and songwriter along the Country Music Highway, will join the Country Music Highway Committee in revealing the dates and locations of the four initial open auditions.

This will set in motion the Road to Fame competition designed to find the next generation of country stars from along the Highway. Details of the qualifying rounds, semi-final rounds and the grand final competition will also be revealed, as well as the age and residency eligibility rules and how to register as a contestant. The winner of the competition will receive a scholarship to participate in career development and coaching under the direction of PCG Nashville valued at $25,000, among other prizes.

Country Music Highway committee members will also recognize the first cash donation made to the Country Music Road to Fame Arts Education Fund and will introduce the panel of judges who will be responsible for adjudicating the competition.

The Judds to Headline Franklin Theater Concert

The legendary Franklin Theatre today announced that hometown country superstars The Judds are sharing their talent for a Green Nights concert on October 18th at 8 p.m. to benefit the historic landmark.

Naomi and Wynonna Judd will play the 300-seat venue as part of the new Green Nights concert series that will help sustain the nonprofit Franklin Theatre for future generations. Tickets to “Green Nights Presents The Judds” start at $85 and will go on sale September 23rd at www.franklintheatre.com.

“As Williamson County residents, The Judds have been devoted friends of the Franklin Theatre for years,” said Mary Pearce, Executive Director of the Heritage Foundation of Franklin and Williamson County, which recently restored the venue. “We are incredibly grateful to Naomi and Wynonna for lending their voices to help make sure the theatre has a bright future.”

“The heart of Franklin is the theater and it’s beating again,” said Naomi Judd. “It never occurred to me that we’d have the thrill of actually performing up on its stage, looking out at smiling familiar neighbors. Pardon me if I shed a tear of nostalgic joy.”

“I love Franklin and knowing that part of it is being kept original is so important to me and my children,” said Wynonna Judd. “I have lived in Franklin since 1978. One of the things I love most is our small town spirit and the way we all hold sacred our unique community. The familiar sights and the beauty I see when cruising down Main Street does my heart good. I am happy and grateful to live in such a special place. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else on the planet.”

In honor of The Judds’ contribution to the Franklin Theatre, the Heritage Foundation will plant a legacy tree in a public space in Williamson County — a nod to the Green Nights philosophy of giving back to the community and the environment that we all care about. Previous Green Nights artists include Vince Gill and Amy Grant, and Michael W. Smith.

Built in 1937, the Franklin Theatre re-opened to the public on June 3 following a multi-year, multi-million-dollar restoration. The Main Street landmark is owned and operated by the nonprofit Heritage Foundation.

Brad Paisley Inks First Major Book Deal

Brad Paisley will publish his first major book titled DIARY OF A PLAYER with Howard Books, an imprint of Simon and Schuster. The new book will be released Nov. 1 and is a salute to the guitar gods of country, blues, and rock & roll who have shaped his life. The book is co-written with David Wild, a contributing editor to Rolling Stone and an Emmy nominated television writer and producer.

Brad Paisley was given his first guitar as a gift from his grandfather when he was eight years old—a gift that would change the whole direction of his life. By twelve, Paisley had written his first song and at thirteen he began opening public performances for country giants including The Judds, Ricky Skaggs, and George Jones. Now in his thirties, Paisley is a critically acclaimed music megastar. DIARY OF A PLAYER is the very personal story of how Paisley’s musical heroes made a guitar man out of him. “It is a love letter to the guitar,” said Howard Books vice president and publisher, Jonathan Merkh.

“The book pays homage to an instrument that Paisley realized was his only real constant no matter how he changed and evolved.” When life gets intense, Paisley said, “There are some people who drink, who seek counseling, eat, or watch TV, cry, sleep, and so on. I play.”
