Rascal Flatts Inducted into the Grand Ole Opry

Rascal Flatts was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry family this evening by Opry member Little Jimmy Dickens. Gary LeVox, Jay DeMarcus, and Joe Don Rooney also helped celebrate the Opry’s 86th birthday during the Opry’s Birthday Bash celebration which aired live on GAC: Great American Country.

Prior to taking the stage, LeVox said, “it is so humbling to carry the Opry flag. There’s no higher pinnacle.”

DeMarcus added, “one of the titles we’re most proud of is member of the Grand Ole Opry.”

Rooney, meanwhile, said he began to reflect on Opry membership after a conversation with his dad earlier in the day. “I remember when I was growing up, I would watch the Grand Ole Opry on TV. He remembers when he was growing up listening to it on the radio. Now here we are in the year 2011 watching and listening online. … We are humbled by this and can’t wait to see what the future has in store for us and the Grand Ole Opry. … Tonight is a great platform from which to set sail.”

The group was surprised by a congratulatory video message from President George W. Bush. “We are big fans of Gary, Jay, and Joe Don,” he said, speaking on behalf of himself and former first lady Laura Bush. “We love their music, and we also love their compassion and generosity. Throughout their success, Rascal Flatts have given back to their community and to our country by supporting the Make A Wish Foundation, Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, and the American Red Cross. I am especially proud of their efforts to honor the men and women of our armed forces, and the heroes who are wounded on the front lines. So thanks for your example of excellence and patriotism. And congratulations as well as a hardy welcome to the Opry.”

“You have witnessed the greatest night of our lives,” LeVox said to the crowd after Dickens had presented the group members with their Opry member awards.

The Opry’s 86th celebration is set to continue through October with performances by Alabama, The Charlie Daniels Band, Oak Ridge Boys, Brad Paisley, Ray Price, Tanya Tucker, Josh Turner, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, and more. The Grand Ole Opry® is presented by Humana®. Opry performances are held every weekend of the year and on Tuesdays through Dec. 13. To plan an Opry visit, call (800) SEE-OPRY or visit opry.com.

Charlie Daniels to Celebrate 75th Birthday at Grand Ole Opry

The Grand Ole Opry® presented by Humana® will throw a 75th birthday party for Opry member and country music/Southern rock stalwart Charlie Daniels during its two shows Sat., Oct. 29. Among those scheduled to participate in the birthday shows in addition to the guest of honor are Opry member Clint Black plus special guests The Grascals, Lee Greenwood, Tanya Tucker, and more.

Daniels, who will turn 75 on Oct. 28, became a Grand Ole Opry member in 2008. During his 50+ year career, he has scored hits on rock, country, pop, and Christian charts. He has received numerous awards from the Country Music Association, Academy of Country Music, the Gospel Music Association, and has won a Grammy®. Born in Wilmington, NC, Daniels was raised on a musical diet that included Pentecostal gospel, local bluegrass bands, rhythm & blues, and country music. His signature song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” topped both the country and pop charts, bringing him international acclaim. His volunteer spirit, support of American troops and down-to-earth philosophy have solidified his reputation as a true American patriot.

“Charlie is without a doubt one of the greatest all-around entertainers to have ever hit the Opry stage,” said Pete Fisher, Opry vice president and general manager. “When the night calls for him to perform crowd favorites and to bring some of his best friends along for a milestone birthday celebration, you know we’re in for two unforgettable shows.”

In honor of the Charlie Daniels salute, the Gaylord Opryland® Resort is offering 20% off its Oct. 29 “Night at the Opry” package including preferred seating Opry tickets and accommodations at the resort. Guests should mention code GOOCD75 when making a reservation in order to activate the discount. To plan an Opry visit, call (800) SEE-OPRY or visit opry.com.

Hank Williams Jr. Brings Out His Rowdy Friends for Popcorn Sutton’s Tennessee White Whiskey Launch

Hank Williams Jr,’s stellar collection of rowdy friends reads like a music business “who’s who” of famous faces – many of them on hand last night to raise a glass to Hank’s personal launch of Popcorn Sutton’s Tennessee White Whiskey.

That “smooth going down” taste is courtesy of the secret recipe blend of the late immortalized legend of Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton – forever enshrined by his death last year as the last of a dying breed of authentic mountain men and makers of marvelous moonshine.

Keeping “Popcorn’s” legend alive will be entrusted to Hank Jr. – a man who appreciates good liquor and respects the free spirited souls of mountain men. Hank Jr. is a business partner (not a paid endorsee) with J&M Concepts and Pam Sutton.

Hank’s friends on hand to celebrate the launch included Kid Rock, Martina McBride, Zac Brown, Colt Ford, Travis Tritt, Eddie Montgomery, Josh Thompson, Jamey Johnson, Randy Houser, Tanya Tucker, Lee Brice, Rodney Atkins, the Kentucky Headhunters, Little Big Town, The Grascals, The Roys, Little Texas, Two Foot Fred, Ira Dean and Heidi Newfield.

The new whiskey will begin in Middle Tennessee and move local bars and retail to region availability. It has a “limited edition” quality in that each batch is made by hand.

Ironic in view of its original origins with Popcorn Sutton’s life outside the reach of “the law” the brand will be the first “white whiskey” to be approved by the federal government.

Although Hank never had the privilege of shaking Popcorn Sutton’s hand in real life he attended his memorial service on October 24, 2009, in Danridge, Tennessee near Knoxville. He was admirer of the legendary moonshine runner.

“He was the last of the real mountain moonshiners that went back,” noted Hank.
“Popcorn was part of the real ‘Thunder Road’ legend, and that is a real part of country music history.”
