Reckless Kelly Presented 3 Checks Totally $30,000 to Local Youth Groups from Its 3rd Celebrity Softball Jam

Members of Austin roots-rock band Reckless Kelly were on the field June 28 at Round Rock’s Dell Diamond to present three checks totaling $30,000 to members and representatives of three area youth baseball groups — The Miracle League at San Antonio, The Miracle League at Town and Country, and Del Valle Little League — proceeds from the band’s 3rd Celebrity Softball Jam, held May 1 at the ballpark.

The band also donated a Toro truck bed full of bats, balls, mitts and more from its inaugural Reckless Recycling Program, which asked Jam-goers to bring new and gently used baseball equipment to give to youth in need.

Thousands of fans filled the stands for the softball game and centerfield concert that featured two teams, Sultans of Sing and One Hit Wonders, made up of sports greats and musicians such as MLB players Greg Swindell and Kirk Dressendorfer, boxing champion Jesse James Lieja and members of Reckless Kelly, Micky and the Motorcars, and the Randy Rogers Band as well as Muzzie Braun, Dale Watson, Pauline Reese, Wade Bowen, George Devore, Asleep at the Wheel’s Ray Benson and many others.

In three years, Reckless Kelly has raised more than $100,000 from its Celebrity Softball Jams, attended by nearly 20,000 fans.

Country Music Stars Continue to Support the Boot Campaign

One-by-one country music stars are taking off their cowboy boots and replacing them with army boots! The Boot Campaign was inspired by retired US Navy SEAL and author of the book Lone Survivor, Marcus Luttrell. The campaign is a way for Americans to give back and say thank you to our armed forces.

Country music stars involved include: legends like George Jones, Oak Ridge Boys, Jan Howard, Mel Tillis, Lee Greenwood and Charlie Daniels, along with hit-makers Josh Turner, Phil Vassar, Joe Nichols, Randy Houser, Gretchen Wilson, Little Texas, Joe Diffie, Jamie O’Neal, Heidi Newfield, Justin Moore, Chuck Wicks, Colt Ford, Randy Rogers Band, Eli Young Band, Derek Sholl, Joey + Rory and Jack Ingram.

Charlie Daniels, who even chose the Boot Campaign to be a part of his annual charity event at the Nashville Palm said, “I’ve never seen anything quite as unique as the Boot Campaign, and I’ve seen a lot!”

Also on board are bluegrass artists The Grascals and The Roys, along with Texas sensations Cross Canadian Ragweed, Robert Earl Keen, Jason Boland, Aaron Watson, Mick and the Motorcars, Reckless Kelly, Wade Bowen, Kevin Fowler, Stoney LaRue, No Justice, Bleu Edmondson, and Granger Smith.

These celebrities along with the Boot Girls are helping to spread the organizations motto: “When They Come Back, We Give Back!” The campaign encourages Americans to purchase a pair of army combat boots to wear in support of our nation’s troops. Proceeds from the boot sales are donated to partner charities, including Luttrell’s Lone Survivor Foundation.

About The Boot Campaign
Known as “the Boot Girls,” Ginger, Leigh Ann, Sherri, Heather and Mariae banned together one fateful night in Tyler, Texas to launch The Boot Campaign giving gratitude and appreciation for the American military. The initiative is quickly gaining awareness with the repertoire of boot images expanding every day. The Boot Girls ask Americans to put their boots on during the routine of daily life to symbolically walk in the shoes of our military men and women, remembering their service and sacrifice. The Campaign’s signature boots are available for purchase online with proceeds benefiting organizations like The Lone Survivor Foundation.

Reckless Kelly Announce 2011 Celebrity Softball Jam

Reckless Kelly rolled up their sleeves last week and joined employees of four Lowe’s Home Improvement stores to refurbish two playing fields for two Austin youth sports groups — putting to use some of the funds raised from the band’s 2nd Celebrity Softball Jam held at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock in April 2010.

Between building and painting, band members Cody and Willy Braun and Jay Nazz announced the date of the 3rd Celebrity Softball Jam: Sunday, May 1, 2011.

At the Montopolis Little League field in East Austin, the Brauns and Nazz joined league coach Israel Lopez and a dozen “Lowe’s Heroes,” employees from stores in Leander and Round Rock, to build and paint an outfield fence to keep car lights off the playing field during games.

At the Balcones Youth Sports field in Central Austin, they joined league president Brad Hughes and 25 other “Lowe’s Heroes,” employees from Lowe’s of Northeast Austin and Lowe’s of Hutto, to repair and paint bleachers, picnic tables and bathroom walls and floors. They also built new bullpens adjacent to both senior field dugouts.

“It was a great day to see the work at hand and help out for the sake of the kids,” said Reckless Kelly front man Willy Braun. “We’ve had a blast doing the past two Celebrity Softball Jams. We wanted to be a part of the result of the funds raised and donated by the fans.

“We were part of a team today of great employees from Lowe’s, who gave their time, tools and expertise to the projects we worked on,” Braun continued. “Thanks to all of the Lowe’s Heroes.”

In two years, Reckless Kelly has raised more than $65,000 for five area youth baseball groups, the Miracle Leagues at Town & Country and San Antonio, South Austin Little League, Balcones Little League and Montopolis Little League, from its Celebrity Softball Jams held in 2009 and 2010 at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock.

Ragged and Reckless Tour Announced

They are two of the hottest and most nationally recognized Texas touring bands in the country. Separately, Cross Canadian Ragweed and Reckless Kelly have long led the Red Dirt Revolution and, after partnering for charitable events and awards shows in years past, the two bands will finally join together for a truly Ragged and Reckless tour beginning March 3 in Nashville, Tennessee.

“I’ll probably come back with a couple of good stories from [that run], I imagine,” laughs Willy Braun of Reckless Kelly. “It’s been a while since we’ve done a full-on tour with those guys, so that will be pretty fun.”

The decision to tour together arose after both bands returned from the sold-out 2010 MusicFest in Steamboat Springs where they shared the stage with Robert Earl Keen, Lee Ann Womack, Chris Knight, Dean Dillon and more. However, the relationship between the two bands extends to early days when they had similar performance circuits, including Lucy’s in Austin, Texas—where both bands now call home.

“We’ve toured with a ton of bands,” remarks Cross Canadian Ragweed’s Cody Canada. “The two that we would tour non-stop with year round is Robert Earl Keen and Reckless Kelly. We first saw Reckless Kelly in 1998 in Dallas and our jaws dropped, and we said that’s who we need to jam with. After a couple of years of chasing those guys we finally got to be friends with them. There’s not a harder working band of brothers than our two bands and we wear that like a badge of honor. We look forward to this run and the rehab that follows.”
