Joyful Noise Soundrack is No. 1!

A Joyful Noise

Joyful Noise debuts this week at #1 on Billboard’s Soundtrack Chart, #1 on the Billboard Gospel chart, #2 on Billboard’s Christian chart, #2 on the Billboard Independent Current Albums chart, and landed a Top 20 debut on Billboard’s Top Current Albums chart.

The soundtrack features performances by Dolly Parton; Queen Latifah;  Keke Palmer;  Karen Peck; and Kirk Franklin. Five-time Grammy®, six-time Dove, two-time Stellar Award winner Mervyn Warren produced and arranged the Joyful Noise soundtrack.

Dolly wrote three new songs for the collection, “From Here to the Moon and Back,”  “Not Enough,” a duet with co-star Queen Latifah, and “He’s Everything,” which includes the film’s stars performing renditions of memorable songs originally recorded by a wide range of artists: Chris Brown, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Sly & the Family Stone, Usher, and Stevie Wonder.

The collection also includes tracks by some of the finest acts in gospel and R&B. Grammy winner Kirk Franklin wrote and takes the vocal reins on his jubilant new song “In Love,” and award-winning gospel vocalist Karen Peck creates harmonic gold on “Mighty High.”

Dolly Parton and Mervyn Warren will be featured on Sirius XM’s “The Bob Edwards Show” on Friday, January 20th.

Dolly Parton & Queen Latifah Talk ‘Joyful Noise’ with Redbook

The stars of Joyful Noise, Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah, chat with REDBOOK about their upcoming movie, friendship and childhoods.

REDBOOK: Tell us about your new movie, which is kind of like Glee set in the gospel world.

Dolly Parton: It’s about a small town struggling to stay afloat.
Queen Latifah: People are losing jobs, and this choir lifts them up.

REDBOOK: Did either one of you identify with the story?

Dolly Parton: Coming from a little town with a lot of hard knocks, I can relate. My grandpa was a preacher, and we had plenty of poor relatives.
Queen Latifah: I grew up singing church music in Bible school, where we kids [from East Orange, NJ] went during vacations to stay out of trouble. My aunt was a choir director and I used to go to rehearsal with her.
Dolly Parton: When I first started writing, recording and performing, it was a gospel. At our little Pentecostal church, we’d do hand-clapping and holy-roller moves.

REDBOOK: Had you known that about Dolly, Latifah?

Queen Latifah: No. I also found out she can rap! And I learned so much just watching her operate with her crew. She gets up and cooks breakfast for everyone, and then pulls 12 to 14 hours a day on set, and still makes friends and family feel they are important.

REDBOOK: What else did you two bond over?

Dolly Parton: We love to eat! I’ve been fighting that battle forever. Latifah would be like, “Damn you!” because I’d be cooking up chicken and dumplings and she’d be trying to diet…
Queen Latifah: Dolly would make this peanut brittle fudge and chocolate treat. I would try to stay away from that, but it would disappear.

Dolly Parton to “Sacrifice” for Better Day

Dolly Parton is set to release “Sacrifice,” the second single from her critically acclaimed latest album Better Day (Dolly Records, distributed through Warner Music Nashville). The new single coincides with a second leg of U.S. tour dates, which kicked off this past Friday, October 7 and wraps October 18 in Florida.

Of the new song, Dolly says, “’The Sacrifice’ is another song that is just so, totally, me. I think it’s so totally everybody that has a dream and desire to be successful, and in order to be successful we have to give up things that we’d rather not. But if we’re not willing to make that sacrifice usually we don’t see those dreams come true.”

Better Day marks the fourth release on her own Dolly Records and her first studio album ever to reach the top 10 in the U.K., where she recently performed a pair of shows (September 7 and 8) at the O2 Arena in London. That’s the same venue where Dolly recorded and filmed Live From London (Dolly Records), her widely praised 2009 two-disc DVD/CD set that included songs from her 2008 Backwoods Barbie album alongside her many classic hits.

Dolly’s fall U.S. dates kicked off Friday, October 7 in Cedar Park, TX and will continue through mid-October before she heads to Australia in November for a run of dates.

In other Dolly news, she will return to the silver screen alongside Queen Latifah in Joyful Noise (Warner Bros. Pictures), a musically driven feature that tells the story of an unlikely partnership between two strong-minded women who are forced to work together to save a small town Gospel choir after budget cuts threaten to shut them down.
