Kellie Pickler Talks Love, Fame, & Military with Parade.com

Kellie Pickler

Kellie Pickler has been busy promoting her new album, 100 Proof; but she’s spent a lot of her time on the road and over seas entertaining our troops. Parade.com sat down to talk to Kellie about all the things she holds dear.

On performing for the troops overseas.
“Out of everything that I’ve ever been able to be a part of, the USO is the one that I’m most proud of and honored to be able to work with. What they’re doing for our military is so great. I’ve loved taking a little piece of home to our troops in Iraq or Afghanistan.”

Do you do anything different for your USO performances?
“Every time that I’ve gone on a USO tour, I only take about three guitar players, so it’s a very intimate setting. We always do meet and greets before and after the shows and try to take as many pictures as we can.”

Is there a particular moment that stands out to you?
“At lunch and dinner, I go to the cafeteria or wherever the military is eating so we can sit and talk and hang out. I just love hearing people’s stories. I’m so fascinated about what they do and I’m so appreciative. I’ve seen how hard it is and it just takes someone very special to be able to commit and do what our military does.”

Dierks Bentley Tells Parade Magazine He’ll “Stick” with What He’s Got

Parade Magazine recently caught up with Dierks Bentley to discuss his family, his music, The Grand Ole Opry, and his involvement with the Wounded Warrior Project. Here’s what he had to say.

Inspiration of the Wounded Warriors pre-parties.
“It came about through my new single ‘Home.’ The song is open to interpretation and certainly one way of hearing it is about the guys and girls making a sacrifice for our country.”

His personal connection to the service.
“My dad and grandpa were in the army and as a country singer you’re constantly playing at military bases all across the country and meeting soldiers and their families and hearing their stories. I think about it a lot and talk a lot about it onstage every night. I’m just so thankful to the 1% of the country that actually serves in the military. And then you have these guys who are coming back and are wounded. They are coming back to a country with some uncertainty. They have issues about their healthy and are trying to reconnect with their families, finds jobs in this economy. It’s time to actually act on your patriotism and do something about it. It’s a great project to get involved with and anybody can.”

On fatherhood.
“It changes your life and as a songwriter it feeds into your music, though I don’t try to write songs like that. Some songs are very specific, but other songs I try so that they can be heard and interpreted in different ways. There are songs on this record that I wrote with my daughter in mind, but they could be a love song, could be a spiritual song, all depends on how you listen to it.”

Trying for a boy?
“Well, I got two boys. I got Jake and George, my two dogs, and I’m good. We’re really happy with what we’ve got. My brother has three girls so I think I’ll stick with two, but you never know.”

Taylor Swift’s “Mean” Available on iTunes

Taylor Swift is counting down the days til her October 25th release of Speak Now with a new release from iTunes. Call me crazy, but I’m more intrigued by the cover art for each of these songs…LOVE IT!

This weeks download, “Mean,” is getting a lot of speculation as to the story behind the song. Taylor recently told Parade magazine a little more about the song, and it stems from some harsh criticism about her voice. Click here to get your copy of “Mean” from iTunes.

“Some days I’m fine and I can just brush it off and go about my day, but some days it absolutely levels me. All I can do is continue to try to work hard every single day and feel everything. I think it’s important to feel things because I then write songs about that. The whole idea of being criticized and the fact that that entered my life made for a song that I’m very proud of on the record, called “Mean.’”

Also available on iTunes is “Back to December” and “Speak Now.”
