CMTT Exclusive: 10 Quick Quirky Questions with Matt Stillwell

Matt Stillwell

Matt Stillwell’s move to Nashville was the ultimate eye-opener.

“I watched friends do showcases and hope someone would show up,” he says. “I watched them being promised record or publishing deals that might or might not happen. So I made the decision that what I needed to do was to eliminate the ‘no’s, and the way to do that was to go build a following.”

A man with a work ethic as big as his talent, Matt did just that, and in this age of American Idol and viral videos, he has built his following the old-fashioned way–one city, one club, one crowd at a time.

He grew up in Sylva, North Carolina, an outdoors paradise that is home to some of the best bluegrass, country and Southern gospel music anywhere. He sang in church and recalls being enthralled by Lee Greenwood at Magic Waters, a theme park in nearby Cherokee. He was also fond of trying to imitate the distinctive voice of Inspirations tenor Archie Watkins. As he grew up, his list of influences grew to include Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Ryan  Adams and Vince Gill.

He has toured the entire country a few times now and continues to grow in popularity all over the country. Breaking in on Billboard’s Country charts with “Shine” (52) and “Sweet Sun Angel” (58) as a true independent has really set the table for big things to come.

”I remember seeing the chart for the first time when “Shine” debuted at (52) and it was awesome! It has really opened a lot of doors for me.”

One of those doors was at Average Joe’s Entertainment, home to Montgomery Gentry, Colt Ford, Corey Smith, and Josh Gracin. The label is on the forefront of grassroots promotion and caters to artist who have gone out and built their on career. They signed Matt to a recording contract, released Shine Deluxe and is now working on a brand new album with producer Mickey Jack Cones.

Andy Griggs Back in the Spotlight, Fans Say Amen!

The unmistakable voice of Andy Griggs has returned to the airwaves and the spotlight and fans couldn’t be happier. The country crooner has returned in a big way with a new single, “Can I Get an Amen,” which Griggs co-wrote and produced. The song is already active at radio despite its add date being January 3, 2011.

The controversial song expresses Griggs’ candid feelings on political correctness and was performed at a campaign rally for Alaska Senate candidate Joe Miller. The emotion-provoking song received a standing ovation from the crowd who demanded an encore performance of the song.

Fans can hear the new song live when Griggs joins newcomer Jason Sturgeon, Average Joe recording artist Matt Stillwell and Aussie singer/songwriter Sherrie’ Austin for a special performance at The Listening Room Café inside Cummins Station in Nashville, TN on December 13th for “Toys for Tots.” The performance starts at 6:00 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy for “Toys for Tots,” which will enter them into a drawing for a $250 gas card. Parking is FREE in The Listening Room lot, just past the Cummins Station pay lot.

Griggs is thrilled to be back in the swing of things, after a not-so-lucky 2009. A fire claimed his family’s Mt. Juliet home, but almost a year to the date of the fire, Griggs and his family moved into their new home.

“It’s been a crazy year, but I’m in a wonderful place right now. My family and I are in our new home for the holidays, we’re all healthy and happy and I’m able to get back out there and give the fans new music- good music,” said Griggs.

“Can I Get an Amen” is available for purchase through Bandbox and iTunes.

Matt Stillwell: Shine-Deluxe – Music Review

The deluxe edition of Matt Stillwell’s debut album, Shine, is a fun, easy listen, but it isn’t a strong enough debut to make him stand out from the pack.

The album includes Stillwell’s first two singles, “Shine” and “Sweet Sun Angel,” which are a standard country drinking song and upbeat love song, respectively. The third single, “Dirt Road Dancing,” sounds like a modern square dance tune and is the most musically distinct of the 13 deluxe album tracks.

The album also includes a remix version of “Dirt Road Dancing,” featuring a rap by “country” rapper Colt Ford, which spoils the original country tune. Another questionable song choice, “Moment of Weakness,” is a seemingly harmless song about the negative effects of poor decisions. However, the first verse of this song tells the story of a married man hiring a prostitute at a roadside motel “in a moment of weakness.” Of course, we all have our weaknesses and make mistakes, but seeking the services of a prostitute seems like more than a MOMENT of weakness. This portion of the song may not rub everyone the wrong way, but it certainly does me.

Aside from the square dance tune, rapping, and prostitute, Stillwell’s debut features a collection of songs you would expect to hear on any country CD, with themes like whiskey (“Whiskey Well”), an ode to a special place (“Oh My Sweet Carolina”), and a drunken attempt at a romantic reconciliation (“Drunk Enough”). While Matt Stillwell makes a solid debut, it could SHINE a little brighter.
