Matt Kennon Launches “Music That Matters” Campaign in the Fight Against Bullying

Matt Kennon

Inspired by the troubles of a young boy he befriended at a school visit last year, Matt Kennon, known for his devotion to writing songs with purpose, penned the song “You Had To Pick On Me” with fellow writers Jami Grooms and Garrett Parris. Addressing the rising issue of bullying, the song has already garnered national attention on its own merit, giving a voice to those who could not speak.

“The overwhelming response and encouragement from my friends, family and the entire community for my song and its message has inspired us to try and reach even more people by developing the ‘Music That Matters’ Video Campaign,” states Matt Kennon. “My last recording, ‘The Call,’ reached over 3.6 million people through YouTube, and I know that with the support of schools, parents and community members,‘You Had To Pick On Me’ and its message could reach many more. We need to raise awareness and generate support against bullying, and hopefully this song will help produce a necessary call-to-action.”

From now until October 15, 2012, schools nationwide are invited to join the ‘Music That Matters’ Video Campaign by submitting student-made videos for the song “You Had To Pick On Me”. At the end of the campaign, the Top Five videos (based on quality and content) will be featured in a nationwide contest for the public to vote on their favorite video, where the winning school will then be recognized with a free concert and meet-and-greet event with Matt Kennon. Additional videos receiving the highest fan-votes will be considered for placement in the official “You Had To Pick On Me” Matt Kennon video.

Through these videos and growing community participation, Kennon hopes that the anti-bullying movement will become unstoppable. “We encourage all schools and kids to share their voices,” adds Kennon. “Let’s make a difference against bullying and protect our future of America, the kids!”

Tracy Lawrence 5th Annual “Mission Possible” Turkey Fry a Huge Success

Tracy Lawrence, some famous Music City friends, MTSU students, local media and volunteers from the Nashville Rescue Mission joined together Tuesday, November 23, 2010 to donate their time at the 5th Annual Tracy Lawrence Mission Possible.

Held for the benefit of the Nashville Rescue Mission, the philanthropic group—comprised of over 100 volunteers—fried-up turkeys for the meal kitchen’s Thanksgiving dinner and Wilson County’s homeless.

Some of Music City’s biggest and brightest names gathered to cook and visit with volunteers and fans. Joining the Master of Ceremonies, Tracy Lawrence, in the “group fry” were his friends in music and entertainment: Brad Arnold (Three Doors Down,) GAC’s Suzanne Alexander, Bo Bice, Burns & Poe, Chelsea Field, Matt Gary, LoCash Cowboys, Lathan Moore, Lorrie Morgan, Danielle Peck, Matt Kennon, The Roys, radio personalities Big D & Bubba and the Titans Cheerleaders.

“I continue to be amazed at how this event has not only grown in size, but grown to become personal to me and the individuals involved,” Tracy Lawrence shares. “I’ve actually become acquainted with some of the folks who have graduated from the program at the Mission; it’s overwhelming to experience their growth. I am moved by how much this little gesture once a year means to them. I wish to extend my genuine ‘thanks’ to all of my friends, the sponsors, media and our community for your help—from the bottom of my heart.”

Although the Mission parking lot was drenched by morning rains, the weather did not dampen the spirit of the event. Generous donations of turkeys, clothing and cash were collected throughout the day; the final fowl figure tallied at just under 800 birds collected and 411 turkeys cooked at 4:30 PM yesterday afternoon. In addition to feeding those individuals in need at the Nashville Rescue Mission over the next few days, Lawrence and his family will also hand-deliver 125 cooked turkeys to a tent city of homeless located not far from his home in Wilson County. The mission’s overall goal is to collect 1000 gobblers before the Thanksgiving week comes to a close; contributions continue to be welcomed and are appreciated.
