Lee Greenwood to Pay Tribute to Fallen Military Heros

Lee Greenwood

Lee Greenwood will participate in a very special tribute to 60 of San Antonio’s fallen military heroes when he performs the National Anthem and “God Bless the USA” at the Valero Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Texas on December 29th, at 8pm. The Valero Alamo Bowl will feature the Washington Huskies and the Baylor Bears.

A long-time supporter of our troops and their families, Greenwood’s pre-game performance will honor those military heroes from the San Antonio area who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past ten years. A city that knows firsthand the importance of fighting for our country’s freedom, members of Lackland Air Force Base 37th Training Wing will unfurl the full field American flag as Greenwood sings “God Bless the USA.” The evening will be especially meaningful for 2011 Valero Bowl Chairman and Spurs team physician, Dr. David Schmidt, whose son recently lost his life while serving in the Marines.

An American Patriot, Greenwood is a Presidential Appointee serving on The National Endowment for the Arts Council. In addition, he was honored with the prestigious National Patriot’s Award, presented by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.

“God Bless the USA,” written by Greenwood in 1983, has been in the top 5 on the country singles charts three times (1985, 1991 and 2001). “I Want to Be in Your World,” Greenwood’s new seven-track EP, was recently released, and his new book is scheduled for publication next Spring.

Charlie Daniels to Celebrate 75th Birthday at Grand Ole Opry

The Grand Ole Opry® presented by Humana® will throw a 75th birthday party for Opry member and country music/Southern rock stalwart Charlie Daniels during its two shows Sat., Oct. 29. Among those scheduled to participate in the birthday shows in addition to the guest of honor are Opry member Clint Black plus special guests The Grascals, Lee Greenwood, Tanya Tucker, and more.

Daniels, who will turn 75 on Oct. 28, became a Grand Ole Opry member in 2008. During his 50+ year career, he has scored hits on rock, country, pop, and Christian charts. He has received numerous awards from the Country Music Association, Academy of Country Music, the Gospel Music Association, and has won a Grammy®. Born in Wilmington, NC, Daniels was raised on a musical diet that included Pentecostal gospel, local bluegrass bands, rhythm & blues, and country music. His signature song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” topped both the country and pop charts, bringing him international acclaim. His volunteer spirit, support of American troops and down-to-earth philosophy have solidified his reputation as a true American patriot.

“Charlie is without a doubt one of the greatest all-around entertainers to have ever hit the Opry stage,” said Pete Fisher, Opry vice president and general manager. “When the night calls for him to perform crowd favorites and to bring some of his best friends along for a milestone birthday celebration, you know we’re in for two unforgettable shows.”

In honor of the Charlie Daniels salute, the Gaylord Opryland® Resort is offering 20% off its Oct. 29 “Night at the Opry” package including preferred seating Opry tickets and accommodations at the resort. Guests should mention code GOOCD75 when making a reservation in order to activate the discount. To plan an Opry visit, call (800) SEE-OPRY or visit opry.com.

Lee Greenwood, Ricky Skaggs, Joey & Rory and The Roys Confirmed for the ICM’s

On October 28th, The Schermerhorn Symphony Center will host the 17th Annual Inspirational Country Music Awards, and taking the stage will be some of today’s most beloved Inspirational Country artists including Lee Greenwood, Joey & Rory, and returning ‘ICM Faith, Family & Country Award’ winners Ricky Skaggs and The Roys.

With four Inspirational Country Music Awards including the 2010 ICM/Inspirational Bluegrass Artist of the Year, 2008 and 2009 Mainstream Country Artist of the Year and 2008 Musician of the Year, Skaggs is no stranger to the event. In his upcoming July 19th release, Country Hits Bluegrass Style, Skaggs pays homage to both his country and bluegrass roots by featuring 14 classic country songs recorded in bluegrass style, sure to garner further national attention. In addition to his ICM Faith, Family & Country Awards, Skaggs has won a total of 8 ACM Awards, 8 CMA Awards, and 14 Grammy Awards.

A special segment during the ceremony will feature songsmith Lee Greenwood, writer of one of the most recognizable songs in America history, to honor the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001 in remembrance of those affected by the tragedy. Throughout Greenwood’s illustrious career he has recorded over 20 albums, sold millions and charted more than 35 singles. Greenwood’s latest body of work, I Want You In My World, is an EP of seven songs including two self-written tracks, set to release on July 25th.

Returning to the show will be reining two-time Inspirational Country Vocal Duo of the Year, The Roys. Their most recent album Lonesome Whistle has taken the bluegrass world by storm, with the album debuting at #7 on the Billboard Bluegrass Charts, and the single, “Coal Minin’ Man”, reaching #1 on the European Hotdisc Chart. “Coal Minin’ Man” currently resides in the Top 10 in both the Bluegrass Unlimited and Bluegrass Music Profiles charts, and holds the #1 position on the Power Source Bluegrass Chart.

Another great addition to the night’s line-up includes husband and wife duo, Joey & Rory, who won the heart of America on the 2008 season of CMT’s Can You Duet. Joey and Rory received the 2010 ACM Top New Vocal Duo Award and currently have a new album aptly titled Album Number Two, which continues to showcase their down-to-earth values. With songs featuring love and faith mixed with cowboys, fame, and the working man, Joey and Rory captivate listeners once again.

Preceding the awards show, the first-ever PINK Carpet Gala Event will take place as breast cancer survivors, country artists, celebrities and more join to celebrate and raise awareness for the cause. During the ceremony, orchestra seating will be filled with breast cancer survivors, each of which will be sponsored by a family member, friend, or business.
