ACM Honors Packed with Performances and Tributes to The Best of the Best

acm honors

Last night artists, songwriters, industry folks and fans gathered at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium to celebrate the off-camera awards from the 51st Annual Academy of Country Music Awards at the ACM Honors. Normally a low-key gathering, this year’s show pulled out the big guns with a performance packed show fit for television. Ironically enough, the show will air September 9th on CBS at 9PM ET/PT.

Musicians, songwriters, artists honored each other with one-of-a-kind covers of songs made famous by those before them. Paying tribute to those that paved the way. Without giving it all away, stand-out performances include Maren Morris’ “Delta Dawn,” Kelsea Ballerini’s tribute to Crystal Gayle with “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue,” Luke Bryan and Cole Swindell’s “Love a Rainy Night” tribute to Eddie Rabbit… but the performance of the night goes to Alicia Keys and Cam absolutely killing Little Big Town‘s “Girl Crush.” Seriously. Those girls can sing.

Academy of Country Music Announces ACM Merle Haggard Spirit Award

merle_haggard_today

The Academy of Country Music® (ACM) announced yesterday the inception of the ACM Merle Haggard Spirit Award. Approved by the ACM Special Awards Panel and voted on by the ACM Board, this new award will honor uncompromising artists in the spirit of Merle Haggard, while acknowledging a man who has figured prominently in ACM history. The Academy will bestow the inaugural ACM Merle Haggard Spirit Award at the 10th Annual ACM Honors™ to a recipient still to be announced. Hosted by multi-ACM Award-winning group Lady Antebellum, the 10th ACM Honors will tape on Tuesday, August 30 at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium, and make its television debut on Friday, September 9 (9:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

One of the leading voices of “California Country” and the Bakersfield Sound, Merle Haggard was an early supporter of the Los Angeles-based ACM and its first Entertainer of the Year in 1970. That honor also made him the Academy’s first Triple Crown recipient, having been awarded Male Vocalist of the Year in 1966 and Most Promising Male Vocalist in 1965. Overall, he is a 20-time ACM honoree and was bestowed with the ACM Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award and the Poet’s Award.

“Merle passed shortly after our 2016 awards show and after this year’s Special Awards were announced,” says ACM Board President Ken Tucker. “That said, there was simply no way the Academy could hold what may be its most heartfelt event – ACM Honors – without creating a lasting way to acknowledge his legacy. Celebrating and encouraging artists whose work echoes Merle Haggard’s indomitable spirit is beyond fitting. On behalf of the board, and with the blessing of his family, we are thrilled to create this important honor.”

This award is given to those who have won New Male/Female Vocalist of the Year, Male/Female Vocalist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year. As previously announced, the 10TH ACM Honors will honor Special Awards recipients Glen Campbell (Career Achievement Award), Crystal Gayle (Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award), Eddie Rabbitt (Poet’s Award, awarded posthumously), Tanya Tucker (Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award), Carrie Underwood (ACM Gary Haber Lifting Lives Award), Keith Urban (Mae Boren Axton Award), Jeff Walker (Jim Reeves International Award, awarded posthumously), Jimmy Webb (Poet’s Award), Little Big Town (Crystal Milestone Award) and The Statler Brothers (Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award).

Lady Antebellum

Musicians On Call (MOC), a nonprofit that brings live and recorded music to the bedsides of patients in healthcare facilities across the country, honored seven-time Grammy Award winning group Lady Antebellum with the Music Heals Award at an exclusive invitation-only event at the Hard Rock Cafe in Nashville last night. The event, part of Musicians On Call’s Half A Million Moments campaign, celebrating the organization’s milestone of performing for half a million patients, families and caregivers, raised over $100K to help continue to spread the healing power of music. The intimate night, hosted by iHeartRadio on-air personality and MOC Board Member Bobby Bones, celebrated the talented trio and featured surprise performances by Lindsay Ell, Hunter Hayes and Eric Paslay who all performed some of their favorite Lady A songs.

The Half A Million Moments Celebration last night also honored outgoing National Board Chair, Scott Welch with the Leadership in Music Award, Volunteer Guide, Richa Chandra, and Volunteer Musician, Laura Eady for their hard work and dedication to helping deliver the healing power of music with MOC. The Half A Million Moments Celebration was thanks in part to sponsors LadyAID, City National Bank, Genentech, CAA, Onsite Workshops, UMG Nashville, Adams & Reese LLP, ASCAP, Grand Ole Opry, Hard Rock International and Hard Rock Heals, Red Light Management, RIAA, SESAC and Warner/Chappell Nashville.

“We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate our milestone of reaching half a million patients, families and caregivers in hospitals then a night like this with our greatest supporters and champions,” said Pete Griffin, Musicians On Call President. “Charles, Dave and Hillary of Lady A have been huge supporters of our program personally and their music has been a staple at our Bedside Performance Programs, always delivering the healing power of music to the patients who hear them.”
