Jeff Allen Releases Self Titled EP – New Music Review

Jeff-Allen

Jeff Allen, A Texas born singer/songwriter released his anticipated 6 song EP November 1, 2011. With his southern soul and country rock sound this EP showcases Allen and all that he brings to the table. Allen has been in the music business longer than some might think. He has toured with and opened for some heavy hitters in the country industry. In 2007 he toured with Emerson Drive, and he has opened for legendary performers such as Randy Travis, Vince Gill, Reba McEntire, Little Big Town and Big and Rich. Now with this new EP gaining some attention I think it is Jeff Allen’s turn to shine.

Being a talented singer, songwriter or guitar player are all three admirable talents, but combine all 3 and you have a force to be reckoned with. Such is the case with Jeff Allen. This album has a really great collection of songs. Allen worked with Kenny Greenberg and Odie Blackmon on this EP project and says the album has a very cohesive feel to it. Allen has also said, “This is the first time I am feeling like the music is exactly the direction that I want to head.”

The album starts with the “Wrong Ones.” This song is filled with honest emotions that Allen conveys so well it will no doubt resonate with you. It has a country rock feel that I could imagine hearing on the radio. The next song, “Burnin” is probably my favorite on the album. It has a strong country sound that instantly draws you in. It also really features the unique tone in Allen’s voice. Up-tempo songs are also very present on the EP. “Nobody’s Watchin” is sure to have you singing along and cranking up the volume. This is a song that would definitely get the crowd on their feet in a live show. Another catchy song is “Elvis Loves a Cadillac.” This song undoubtedly has some rock flair. Put quite simply it is a fun song with a contagious sound.

This EP is solid. The songs, vocals and the instrumentation all add up to equal something Jeff Allen should be proud of. I would recommend giving this EP a listen.

With a lot of newer artists on the horizon Allen’s music stands out and makes you take note and remember his name.

Jeff Allen – On His Way to the Top

Born and raised in a musical family in Canton, TX, Jeff Allen is the epitome of the down-home country boy. He grew up around music and began to love it from a young age. His first album, Raised on Gettin’ By, is his first full length studio recording. Allen wrote or co-wrote eight of the 11 songs for the project making it an extremely personal reflection of the man himself.

Jeff’s song “Raised on Gettin’ By” speaks of real life as he was growing up. His first car was a pick-up truck, and was so proud of it, it was like a cadillac to him. All of his blue jeans he owned were hand-me-downs that already had holes in the knees, but he also had a hand in wearing them out, and he was proud of it! Jeff said “if you don’t have it already, you don’t need it now, there’s a lot of things you can live without”. I agree with that statement.

If you’re still livin’ with out it, my bet is that you still will. This is Allen’s personal favorite because of its message of working hard to earn the things you have. “That song, I think, tells more of my story than any other song on the album,” says Allen. However, he is quick to point out that the entire album hits close to home and unfolds as a collection of stories and memories from his own life.

Allen has come a long way from his humble beginnings to achieving respect as both an artist and a songwriter. He manages to stay modest about his success thus far and is determined to have staying power. “In ten years, I’d love to still be on tour full-time and have few songs on the radio,” says Allen. “I just want to make a living writing and playing the music I love.”
