Country music ruled over “American Idol” last year brining two great new voices with Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina. Can country music bring winners for the second year in a row? Auditions for season 11 began last night with auditions from Savannah, Georgia.
Jennifer Lopez says she got “goosies” listening to Lauren Mink (video above) of Winchester, Kentucky sing “Country Strong.” Steven Tyler told Mink she sure is country strong and she’s beautiful, too. She got a ticket to Hollywood. Mink is 25.
Stephanie Renae of Orange Park, Florida is right at the age limit. She’s 15 and says she’s inspired by Carrie Underwood. She performed “Inside Your Heaven,” from “Some Hearts.” Lopez gave Renae a “yes” even though she says she’s a bit nasally. Tyler also gave her a “yes.” That was enough to get her a golden ticket to Hollywood, even though Randy Jackson gave her a “no.”

And BTW…I say shame on Mawuena Kodjo. He absolutely runied Rascal Flatts “I Won’t Let Go.” What was he thinking? Randy Jackson said it best last night, “Dude. Dude it was really terrible.”

Reba McEntire, Taylor Swift, Garth Brooks, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, Tom T. Hall and the late Hank Cochran are early winners from the Academy of Country Music.
Reba McEntire has received Career Achievement Award. Taylor was honored with the Jim Reeves International Award for helping country music be accepted throughout the world. It might be hard to imagine Garth Brooks as a country music pioneer. But, he’s sharing the ACM’s Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award with Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers. And the Poet’s Award goes to Tom T. Hall and Hank Cochran.
“Country Strong” has been chosen for the Academy of Country Music’s Tex Ritter Award. It goes to a movie that features or uses country music. The ACM singles out the storyline. And it praises the movie’s four leads for their “strong performances” on the soundtrack: Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim McGraw, Garrett Hedlund and Leighton Meester.
