DeWayne Spaw is more than an artist and songwriter – he is an experience and, if you’ve ever enjoyed the experience of one of his performances, or several as I have, he is someone you will never forget. DeWayne is a combination of high energy and expression and to watch him perform is like watching country music in motion.
DeWayne grew up in the rural area of Indiana where he learned to love music at an early age. Although his mother played piano and sang at church and his father kept the radio station tuned to only country music stations, he credits his dearly departed grandfather for instilling the love of country music into DeWayne’s heart. DeWayne inherited the songwriting and community involvement aspects of his grandfather’s life and turned it into his passion – writing and performing his own songs.
I met DeWayne on the rodeo circuit many years ago and since then he has performed at many fairs, rodeos and festivals where he prefers the family atmosphere and adores children. One of DeWayne’s interests is in the induction of The Cowboy Promise (Make a Cowboy Promise) which is an anti drug program he founded that focuses on telling America’s youth Don’t Use Drugs!
DeWayne has opened for country greats Blake Shelton, Keith Urban and Jason Aldean and listening to DeWayne’s music will move you out of your seat and bring you to your feet as he moves through the entire audience singing his songs, many with a rock edge to the music and you will find yourself clapping and toe-tapping to this man’s “real deal” musical repertoire.
His newest CD “Latest and Greatest Hits II” combines five new songs as well as nine previously recorded songs from his CD’s “Money, Gun & The Bible” and “Flirtin’ With Disaster”. He also has a DVD that features some of his best songs called “DeWayne Spaw – Video Hits” and he is a regular played on Nixa Country online radio.
One of my favorite songs is “Against the Grain” – a song about making your own rules, taking the hard roads, paying your own dues and working your own way through life. He sings about not worrying about tomorrow because it’s just another day. There was a hurricane blowing the day he was born and ever since he’s been riding in the eye of the storm and going against the grain.
I also liked “You Won’t Hear the Bullet”. This song is about lifestyles and choices you make each and every day which lead you to dropping to the ground one day. The words really hit home about taking care of your health and attitude throughout life because you won’t hear the bullet until it’s too late.
“For the Ride” is from one of his previous CD’s and has always been a favorite of mine that he performed at rodeos and bull ridings. This song is a very quick tempo and to the point about a cowboy coming to the rodeo for the ride. He sings about the cowboy being crazy and the bull being insane with the fury unleashed as the 8-second story unfolds. This is a true cowboy rodeo song and will really get you in the mood for a good ride!
