DixieChicksTim McGraw

The Dixie Chicks do have new music available today. They have one song as part of a charity compilation soundtrack album inspired by the HBO documentary that followed Barack Obama’s campaign. It’s called “By The People: The Election Of Barack Obama.”

Others on the album are Tim McGraw, Sheryl Crow, Bruce Springsteen, John Mayer, Ben Harper and more. Money raised goes to the United Way to support Gulf Coast rebuilding in conjunction with the non-profit Enterprise Community Partners. The album is digital and only available on iTunes.

Kenny Chesney came in the top 3 for Pollstar’s Top Tours of the Decade.  Bringing in more than $455 million over the past 10 years from touring.  Kenny was only topped by Dave Matthews and Celine Dion. Top Tours So Far This Year – Are Ticket Prices Too High??

Kenny Chesney

As much as I would not call myself a Kenny Chesney fan anymore it looks like he is still doing something right.  Kenny Chesney is the only country act in the Top 10 of Pollstar’s annual midyear report, ranking the most successful concert tours at the halfway point of every year.

Kenny landed at a very respectable number 7 on the list.  With Britney Spears taking number one, Fleetwood Mac (2), Celine Dion (3), Elton John/Billy Joel (4), the Eagles (5),  and Bruce Springsteen (6), Chesney and Dave Matthews (8).

Rascal Flatts took in number 18 and George Strait number 30 so far for this year.

Looks like the secret to the success for this year may be lower ticket prices.  Kenny says he does realize how tough things are right now for fans.

”I know this is a rough summer,” said Chesney. “I remember how it is when you want to, and you gotta figure out what you’re not gonna do. It’s why we’ve really tried to keep the prices reasonable… put on a good show… but especially to give people for those few hours a reason to just have a good time. I can’t solve the problems, but maybe I can get you to forget… to laugh… be free and remember how great it feels to be alive.”

“When you have to decide,” said Chesney, “I wanna know we’re giving the people the best show, that we’re a good way to spend your money. That we’re stacking up against such big tours – and music that is anything but what we do, well, that makes me proud for the genre, too.”

Rascal Flatts are very well known for their great stage show. The boys put on one hell of a show (one that I would never pass up) but I don’t have very much to say about their ticket prices. They seem to creep up just a little bit more each year and I worry that if something doesn’t change we may be paying upwards of $100 per ticket here in Nashville soon.   I would prefer that they stop lugging around 13 buses of their stage around (it costs almost $13,000 per show to move their stage) and strip down their performance in return for lower ticket prices.

Would you rather pay higher ticket prices for a BIG stage, fireworks and show or lower ticket prices and make it all about the music?

Bruce Springsteen Sticks Up for Fans Rights and Blasts Ticketmaster

Rollingstone is reporting on the major ticket issues going down with Ticketmaster.  Bruce Springsteen fans had a few problems while trying to purchase tickets for the Working on a Dream Tour earlier this week.  There were technical difficulties with the Ticketmaster site, but fans also complained about being redirected to Ticketmasters affiliate site TicketsNow.  TicketsNow sells over-priced tickets.  This is usually only an option after concerts are sold out.  However, many fans complained they were redirected while regular seats were still available.

Last Monday, we were informed that Ticketmaster was redirecting your log-in requests for tickets at face value, to their secondary site TicketsNow, which specializes in up-selling tickets at above face value. They did this even when other seats remained available at face value. We condemn this practice,” Springsteen and his tour team said in a letter posted on Bruce’s official site. “We have asked this redirection from Ticketmaster to TicketsNow cease and desist immediately and Ticketmaster has agreed to do so in the future and has removed its unwanted material from their and our site.”

Ticketmaster is already under scrutiny because of the “talk” about Live Nation and Ticketmaster merging.  This would cause a ticket monopoly, and create a problematic market for fans who already have to fight ticket brokers for the seats they deserve.

Springsteen isn’t keen on the idea of a Live Nation Ticketmaster merge either. “A final point for now: the one thing that would make the current ticket situation even worse for the fan than it is now would be Ticketmaster and Live Nation coming up with a single system, thereby returning us to a near monopoly situation in music ticketing,” Springsteen writes. “If you, like us, oppose that idea, you should make it known to your representatives.”

I realize that Bruce Springsteen isn’t country…but this is a problem for all genres.  Times are tough, and tickets are expensive.  Fans do not need the added stress of fighting for tickets.  I am happy to see “The Boss” fighting for our rights and sticking up for his fans.  I think more artists need to take note and step it up a notch.

Rascal Flatts, Brad Paisley, and Dierks Bentleyare known for making sure their fans get the best of the best.  They purposely block out the best seats in the house for fan-club members.  Other artists, like Keith Urban, need to take note.  Getting good seats to see Keith is an expensive and time consuming venture.  Brokers almost always get the good seats, and fans end up paying through the nose.  I can’t imagine having the added stress of Ticketmaster not allowing me to purchase a face-value ticket and redirecting me to a broker site.
