Bellamy Bros. Now Considering Legal Action Regarding New Britney Spears Release

After releasing a Tuesday statement directed at popstar Britney Spears, the Bellamy Brothers have the media buzzing worldwide. Most are asking the question, “Will we see a lawsuit?” It’s possible. Earlier yesterday, the brothers’ Nashville publicist confirmed the group has indeed decided to “weigh their legal options.” The country music duo is claiming Spears ‘ripped off’ their 1979 hit, “If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body, Would You Hold It Against Me” with her new single, “Hold It Against Me.”

In the time since the Bellamys released their public statement, the media coverage has poured in from all around the world. TMZ was the first to provide coverage, posting both songs and asking viewers to vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ in a poll titled, ‘Britney’s song – rip off?’ Celebrity news blogger Perez Hilton titled his post on the topic, “Is Britney’s ‘Hold It Against Me’ a rip-off?” Tuesday, in talking with Entertainment Weekly, David Bellamy, still a bit surprised by the happenings, admitted, “It’s not every day that you get into the middle of a brawl with Britney Spears.” On Spears’ new single, “Hold It Against Me,” Bellamy reaffirmed his stance with the Boston Herald by stating, “When I did listen to her song, I thought ‘Well this is rather unoriginal.’”

Yahoo! News Music blogger Chris Willman made an interesting deduction when he noted that “Hold It Against Me” writers Dr. Luke and Max Martin seem to have a past history of snagging similar song titles of yesteryear for new music, specifically Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” and “I Kissed A Girl.” Willman writes, “There does seem to be a bit of a pattern emerging in the Dr. Luke/Max Martin camp, where everything old is new again, when it comes to appropriating familiar old titles or lyrical hooks. Dr. Luke has said in interviews that he’s not that much of a lyric guy, so it seems entirely likely that Katy Perry was responsible for borrowing those earlier titles—and that Britney had this one pop into her head, after almost certain exposure to it growing up in the South.”

What are your thoughts on the 2 songs?

Jake Owen Finally Puts the Britney Rumors To Rest

So is there any truth to the stories about Jake Owen dating Britney Spears? “No, not at all,” Jake told DJs Scotty and Carissa on Clear 99 Columbia, Missouri, last week.

Chuckling when the subject came up, explains that he was invited to Britney’s show about six months ago, and “I ended up getting a lap dance on stage from her, which was pretty interesting.” A video of the show hit the internet and fueled dating rumors, which are “totally not the case at all.” In fact, “I haven’t talked to her since,” he insists.

Despite the continuing questions – which he laughs off — he says he enjoyed meeting the sexy pop sensation: “She’s a great girl. She’s a nice girl and it was interesting to meet her and be in that whole different world.”

Jake has had his own share of attention for his sex appeal, of course, including being named one of People magazine’s Sexiest Men in Country, a designation he laughs off. “I got into this stuff to play music and sing songs, not to be on the cover of some glamour magazine,” he says.

While he may not enjoy the title, his family members seem to get a kick out of it. “I got a lot of crap for that from my brother,” he explains. “My mom’s always laughing at stuff like that. She gets to show her friends,” he adds.

Top Tours So Far This Year – Are Ticket Prices Too High??

Kenny Chesney

As much as I would not call myself a Kenny Chesney fan anymore it looks like he is still doing something right.  Kenny Chesney is the only country act in the Top 10 of Pollstar’s annual midyear report, ranking the most successful concert tours at the halfway point of every year.

Kenny landed at a very respectable number 7 on the list.  With Britney Spears taking number one, Fleetwood Mac (2), Celine Dion (3), Elton John/Billy Joel (4), the Eagles (5),  and Bruce Springsteen (6), Chesney and Dave Matthews (8).

Rascal Flatts took in number 18 and George Strait number 30 so far for this year.

Looks like the secret to the success for this year may be lower ticket prices.  Kenny says he does realize how tough things are right now for fans.

”I know this is a rough summer,” said Chesney. “I remember how it is when you want to, and you gotta figure out what you’re not gonna do. It’s why we’ve really tried to keep the prices reasonable… put on a good show… but especially to give people for those few hours a reason to just have a good time. I can’t solve the problems, but maybe I can get you to forget… to laugh… be free and remember how great it feels to be alive.”

“When you have to decide,” said Chesney, “I wanna know we’re giving the people the best show, that we’re a good way to spend your money. That we’re stacking up against such big tours – and music that is anything but what we do, well, that makes me proud for the genre, too.”

Rascal Flatts are very well known for their great stage show. The boys put on one hell of a show (one that I would never pass up) but I don’t have very much to say about their ticket prices. They seem to creep up just a little bit more each year and I worry that if something doesn’t change we may be paying upwards of $100 per ticket here in Nashville soon.   I would prefer that they stop lugging around 13 buses of their stage around (it costs almost $13,000 per show to move their stage) and strip down their performance in return for lower ticket prices.

Would you rather pay higher ticket prices for a BIG stage, fireworks and show or lower ticket prices and make it all about the music?

Sex Doesn’t Sell Anymore? Taylor Gets Credit for Romance

According to a recent article in the Boston Globe romance is the new “it” thing.  And they are giving Taylor Swift credit where they believe credit is due.    Here is a quote from the article:

Eighteen-year-old music phenom Taylor Swift has scaled the charts with narratives that suggest there is more to romance than sex. Swift’s former boyfriend Joe Jonas and his siblings in the pop group the Jonas Brothers wear purity rings to signal their vows to remain chaste prior to marriage. Disney franchises like “High School Musical” and “Hannah Montana” peddle wholesomeness as fervently – and profitably – as then-17-year-old Spears begged her boyfriend to “hit me baby one more time.”

They go on to say that she represents a radical departure from the last wave of teen icons, whose seductive looks and lyrics encouraged girls, like all teenagers, impatient to grow up, to hurry it up.

Ok, I LOVE Taylor and think that compared to Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus and Christina Aguilera she is a saint.  BUT – Taylor still does things that are a bit risky for a teenager to watch.  Do you remember her water routine at an awards show this past year?  What message was that supposed to send to a thirteen year old?  Also, she has boys ripping off her clothes to reveal cute and sparkly dresses in almost every performance.

I will agree that Taylor is much more conservative than others in the music industry (especially pop music) and that her music reflects a great spin on an unattainable romance situation with boys.  BUT – I would not go as far as to say that she is a role model for teenage girls in America.   Just my two cents.  As I step off my soapbox.
