The Grand Ole Opry Graces the Old Ryman Floor for the Last Time

Keith Urban & Steve Wariner

Last night, Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium was busting at the seams to watch the very last Grand Ole Opry show of the season, and the very last performance on the floor that supported the steps of legends. Last night’s crowd may have also been a little bigger than usual because Keith Urban performed for the first time in public since his vocal chord surgery in November.

Keith Urban

The only shows Keith had to cancel due to the surgery were two Grand Ole Opry performances. Well, he more than made up for it last night. Monkeyville members were obvious and everywhere to see and hear Keith for the first time in what seemed like ages. They were not disappointed. Keith was the last performer to take the stage last night, and was given a longer than the usual two-song set.

First Keith performed a beautiful rendition of “Long Hot Summer” with a string quartet. Wow, this totally changes the feeling of the song…makes it very whistful and almost sad. He also performed “You Gonna Fly” with a full band, “Making Memories of Us” totally acoustic, even unplugging and letting the crowd sing a full chorus, and “Somebody Like You.” I must say, Keith sounded better than ever with a new smoothness to his voice, and he looked thrilled to be performing again.

It was a great night, one many will never forget. I won’t lie…many of Keith’s fans thought “tonight is the night” while sitting in their pews. There was something in the air, and the stars seemed to be aligned. We were certain we were there to witness Keith Urban be asked to join The Grand Ole Opry. We all left a tad disappointed wondering “Why?”, but we’re certain his time will come. In the meantime, we got to see first hand that nothing can keep that man down.

Charlie Pride

Also performing the Opry last night were Jim Ed Brown, Eden’s Edge who gave a goosebump-inducing acoustic performance, The Oak Ridge Boys who got a standing ovation for an acapella version of “Amazing Grace” and a foot-stomping “Elvira,” and the legendary Charley Pride who performed “Kissed an Angel Good Morning.”

Edens Edge at Opry

So many legendary folks have paced those old floor boards since 1951…The next great artists will get to make their mark on the new floor.

CMA Songwriters’ Series Goes Over Seas!

clintblack

CMA Songwriters Series is coming to the U.K. and Ireland for the first time with special performances in February 2012 scheduled for London, Belfast, and Dublin, CMA Chief Executive Officer Steve Moore announced today. The international tour will be known as CMA & BMI Present the CMA Songwriter Series.

“The CMA Songwriter Series began in 2005 in New York and has expanded to cities across the United States including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Nashville, and Washington D.C.,” Moore said. “The popularity of our music overseas and the appreciation the audience in the U.K. has for our songwriters made this a good fit and an opportune time to travel the series abroad. And it is terrific to have BMI as a partner in this exciting initiative.”

The CMA Songwriters Series showcases the best of Nashville’s mega-hit songwriters and songwriter artists. The series features successful songwriters and artists from Nashville, who line up on stage and, with guitar in-hand, take turns telling the stories behind their hit songs and performing them in the raw as originally written.

Songwriters participating in the CMA & BMI Present the CMA Songwriter Series include Country Music Hall of Fame member Bill Anderson, former CMA Male Vocalist of the Year Clint Black, and host Bob DiPiero.

“I think it’s great,” Anderson said of the Series traveling to the U.K. and Ireland. “I’ve toured there several times as an artist, and have always been amazed at the fans’ depth of knowledge concerning Country Music. This will be my first time appearing as a writer. I have a feeling that I’ll find great interest in how the songs are created, as well as performed.”

Anderson, who has appeared at CMA Songwriter Series events in New York City, said he doesn’t plan on changing the winning formula of telling stories and singing songs.

Anderson admits that the musical connections between the U.S. and U.K. are closer than they appear – especially between the bluegrass roots of the format and traditional Celtic sounds.

“Put on a Bill Monroe record, close your eyes, and you can feel yourself being transported back to an earlier time in Ireland and Scotland,” he said. “Those folks dug the wells from which our music sprang.”

Black said it is a completely different experience for the audience to not only hear a hit song performed by the songwriter, but to also get the interesting or funny stories behind a song you know and love.

“It’s as close to sitting around with a bunch of songwriters as you can get without sitting around with a bunch of songwriters,” he said.

The CMA & BMI Present the CMA Songwriter Series in the U.K. and Ireland takes place Feb. 22-25. Details will be announced soon. For updates and information, visit www.CMAsongwriterseries.com.

Vince Gill’s Opry Anniversary – A Fans Review

Vince Gill celebrated 20 years as a member of the Grand Ole Opry August 13th. The show was sold out as anxious fans poured into the Opry house to see Vince and friends celebrate this special occasion. The man of the hour, Vince Gill opened the show in true Vince fashion. Billy Grammar a fellow Opry member had passed away, so Vince chose to open with “Gotta Travel On”, in tribute to his friend.

Many memorable “Opry Moments” followed as the night went on. A wonderful video montage of Vince’s Opry career was shown. Artists such as Little Jimmy Dickens, Martina McBride, Jon Anderson, Emmylou Harris, Bobby Osborne and the Rocky Top X-Press, Bill Anderson, The Whites, Jean Shepard, and The Time Jumpers all showed up to sing, and honor their friend. Vince joked at one point saying he saw Little Jimmy Dickens backstage and Little Jimmy said, “ 20 years is great kid, but I have done that 3 times!” Vince also played and sang with Emmylou Harris as well as with the Time Jumpers. The most touching part of the evening was the last half hour when 2 musical guests close to Vince’s heart took the stage.

His daughter Jenny Gill came out and did a show-stopping rendition of “If You Ever Have Forever in Mind”.  Vince sat back and watched grinning from ear to ear as his talented daughter sang his song. Afterward he said the best part of that was just getting to sit back and be her dad. Next Vince got to introduce the lady he calls the kindest soul to ever walk the earth, Mrs. Amy Grant. She came out and she sang a beautiful song she had written for Vince called, “True Love”.

The evening ended with Vince center stage. He was so humble as he thanked everyone for coming and told the crowd how much the Grand Ole Opry means to him. He spoke from his heart as he said he treasures all the friendships that have been made backstage and in the hallways. It was a truly memorable evening. Vince closed the show by saying “In the Immortal words of Mr. Roy Acuff….You better sing the one that brung ya” Vince Gill honored those words from Mr. Acuff and sang “When I Call Your Name.”

August 29th, marks the release of the single “Threaten Me With Heaven” by Vince Gill. This is the first new music we have heard from Vince since his grammy winning 4 disc CD set “These Days” in 2006. “Threaten Me With Heaven” is the first single off his CD “Guitar Slinger” set for release October 24th.
