Folksy singer/songwriter Amos Lee released his EP “As The Crow Flies” on February 14th. This anticipated 6-song album comes on the heels of his last billboard chart topping 2011 release “Mission Bell.” This EP consists of previously unreleased songs that were recorded during the “Mission Bell” recording sessions. Lee also gets some help from a few of his friends, Joey Burns and John Convertino, from the indie folk band Calexico on this new project.
The album starts out with “The Darkness” and its title describes its overall feel to a “T.” It is definitely a dark song. While the lyrics are thoughtful and Lee’s voice shines, the song surely did not resonate with me. The next song, “Simple Things” was slightly better, but still did not completely capture my attention. Some of the other songs also left me with a similar sentiment. They were not unpleasant by any means, but not captivating either. I love a slow song and a good ballad, but some of these songs just did not keep my interest.
However with that said, the EP does have some very bright spots as well. I really enjoyed, “Say Goodbye” and “There I Go Again.” Both of these songs had a feel good vibe and left me feeling impressed. In addition, Amos Lee could sing anything and sound fantastic. In all of the songs his voice stands out and is ever so smooth. Even on the songs I found to be a bit dreary, Lee’s vocal ability was still impressive. All of the songs on this EP are well written and he shows conviction in his delivery.
If you are already a fan of Amos Lee’s past projects you more than likely will enjoy “As The Crow Flies”. If you are not familiar with Amos Lee, I would still recommend sampling this EP. With so many voices out there today that are sound-alikes or don’t have any distinguishing factors, Amos Lee’s voice leaves an impression…. a good one!
