Former “American Idol” runner-up Clay Aiken has made it official: he’s running for Congress. He has officially filed the paperwork to seek office in North Carolina. Aiken, a Democrat, says he wants to help end the gridlock in Washington and that no single political party has all the answers.
Aiken is seeking the 2nd District seat now held by Republican Renee Ellmers. The district is GOP-leaning — and Aiken may have trouble winning in part because he’s openly gay, but he says he doesn’t think that will be a factor in the general election.
“I am comfortable with myself. I am comfortable with the campaign we’re running,” Aiken said. “I am positive that people are going to vote for the person who they think will do the best job, who they think can win in November.”
Aiken’s campaign has raised more than $100,000 so far, while his Republican rival has $260,000 in the bank. The Democratic primary is less than 10 weeks away.
