The Final Recordings of Waylon Jennings to be Released 10 Years After His Death

Waylon Jennings

A new album from outlaw country legend Waylon Jennings will be released this September, filled with recordings the icon made during the last few years before his death in 2002. Jennings spent hours in a recording studio with his longtime accompanist, Robby Turner and together they laid down twelve tracks using just Waylon’s guitar and vocals and Turner’s bass.

All songs were personally selected by the country star, ones that resonated in a deeply personal way and reflected his state of mind, his passions, and important statements he wanted to make about his life. The duo planned out the future instrumentation that would be added to the tracks, but Jennings was never able to complete them. 10 years after his passing, Turner returned to the recordings, finishing each song to honor Waylon’s vision of what would turn out to be his very last album. Bringing in musicians who had long worked with Waylon, such as Reggie Young, Richie Albright and tour mate Tony Joe White, Turner painstakingly created the album that Waylon set out to make.

“Waylon knows he’s surrounded by friends and all that hear this will feel as if they know Waylon in all his authenticity,” explains his widow, country singer Jessi Colter.

With his family’s blessing, Goin’ Down Rockin’: The Last Recordings of Waylon Jennings will be available on September 11 (Saguaro Road Records). No one has ever heard these performances before; they are Waylon’s last gift to his fans.

Saguaro Road Records’ Senior Vice President, Retail, Mike Jason explains,

“I remember when Waylon was revolutionizing country music and when we heard about these recordings, I knew we had to have them. To me, this is classic Waylon music every bit as good as his ‘70s classics but his singing bears a vulnerable and deeply personal touch. Waylon still has many fans, but with these recordings I’m confident that we’ll introduce him to a new generation in the same way that Johnny Cash’s last recordings found him an entirely new audience.”

Jennings wrote 11 of the 12 songs that appear on the new album, a testament to the personal nature of the recordings, and they reveal an artist in the midst of a final creative peak. In addition to his own songs, the album includes Tony Joe White’s “Goin’ Down Rockin’” (on which White himself is a guest). In all, the album will feature eleven songs that have never been released before.

Waylon Jennings Tribute Album Volume II Includes Dierks Bentley, Justin Moore, Hank Williams Jr. and More!

Waylon

Today, Average Joes Entertainment, in conjunction with Scatter Records, announced the official release date for WAYLON – The Music Inside: A Collaboration Dedicated to Waylon Jennings, Volume II. The album will be available for pre-sale purchase digitally on January 24, 2012, with availability at retail starting on February 7, 2012.

The eleven-track album, and the second of a three volume series dedicated to the late Waylon Jennings, features country music artists performing the hit songs that made Jennings a household name. WAYLON – The Music Inside, Volume II boasts a solid lineup of artists each of who were heavily influenced by Jennings’ legacy. The lineup for WAYLON – The Music Inside, Volume II includes Dierks Bentley, Justin Moore, Hank Williams Jr., Jessi Colter, Montgomery Gentry, Jewel, Jack Ingram, Colt Ford, Josh Thompson, Pat Green and Wyatt McCubbin.

“I feel like this project could very likely break another sound barrier,” says Jessi Colter. “Waylon was so original. For his songs to be sang by other people and to take me somewhere else is not an easy task.”

Recording for the three volume series started over three-and-a-half years ago, and has been a labor of love for Jennings’ widow Jessi Colter; son Shooter Jennings; and guitarist Reggie Young. They, along with producer Witt Stewart, have assembled a star-studded roster of artists to pay tribute to Jennings and highlight his undeniable musical and cultural influence.

Colter adds, “I’ve been pleasantly surprised of the fact that the people involved chose to make the songs their own. They add something to it and to me that’s what makes it interesting. They made it their own because they could never walk in Waylon’s tracks. They’d be stepping in holes.”

Waylon Jennings is recognized as one of the key players of country music’s ‘outlaw’ movement. Jennings was in good company with fellow artists of his time including Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Kris Kristofferson. They were the musical talents who defined a new genre of music with rebellious attitudes, which, in turn, translated over into their music. The ‘outlaw’ rebellion denied Nashville’s straight-laced model and brought the era of whiskey-drinkin,’ bar brawlin,’ woman lovin,’ country music to the forefront.  WAYLON – The Music Inside, Volume I, was released last year and is available for purchase now.

Breaking the Myth: Waylon Jennings Available Today for Download

“Breaking the Myth: Waylon Jennings” is available for fans to purchase at http://www.waylonjennings.com/BuyVideo starting today. The moving documentary chronicles the making of The Music Inside, the recently released tribute album dedicated to Waylon Jennings. The album and documentary celebrate Waylon’s enduring musical and cultural legacy and chronicles his role in founding country music’s outlaw movement.

Album producer Witt Stewart first saw Jennings working as a DJ at a Lubbock, TX, radio station while on a school field trip. Decades later he’d gain the support of Jennings’ widow and son, Jessi Colter and Shooter Jennings, to create what would be a 3-CD series in tribute to the original outlaw. The moving documentary “Breaking the Myth: Waylon Jennings” includes special studio access to artists such as Kris Kristofferson, Hank Williams, Jr., Dierks Bentley, Alabama, John Hiatt, Jamey Johnson, Randy Houser, Pat Green, Patti Griffin and Sunny Sweeney working on their tracks for the project. These same stars – several of whom knew him well – talk about Waylon the man and the influence he had on them musically while acknowledging the doors he broke down for artists who would come after him. And Waylon, the husband and father, are lovingly remembered by Jessi and Shooter who share personal memories throughout the documentary.

Some of the classic Waylon songs included in the show:

“Belle of the Ball” – Shooter Jennings
“New Wine” – Jessi Colter
“Love Is The Last Thing To Go” – Kris Kristofferson
“Lonesome, Ornery and Mean”- Dierks Bentley
