More than 50,000 fans went coastal with Kenny Chesney Saturday night in Tampa (3/19) at the first of his 11 stadium shows and second stop of his 2011 Goin’ Coastal Tour. “I saw the first show in West Palm Beach (3/17) and the stadium show in Tampa,” our insider reports. “Both are great, one’s just on steroids.” The stadium-show entrance was under wraps until the Saturday date. “You know the camera-on-wires they use at NFL games? He was on that kind of setup, so instead of coming in on a straight line like a zip-line, he was able to move around about 30-50 feet over the audience. He probably had two minutes of airtime before hitting the stage with probably a minute left in the first song.” Setting Chesney up were Uncle Kracker, Billy Currington and the Zac Brown Band, who hosted an eat-and-greet for fans prior to the show and mixed Van Morrison and Charlie Daniels Band covers in their set.
For the encore, ZBB and Chesney played a 20-minute super-group jam, which included “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy,” along with Alabama’s “Dixieland Delight,” Rolling Stones “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ “Runnin’ Down A Dream.” Celebrity sightings at the Sunshine State dates included NFL greats Joe Namath, Jason Witten, Wes Welker and Jon Gruden; and MLB players Nick Swisher, Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay and John Smoltz.
