The Sony/Nashville General Jackson Show & Dinner Cruise closes with a group performance Thursday night in Nashville (2/23). Pictured (l-r) are Kix Brooks, Carrie Underwood, Kristen Kelly, Sara Evans and Jake Owen.

With a benediction from good captain Gary Overton (Sony/Nashville Chairman) and hosted by mates Sara Evans, Kellie Pickler and Storme Warren, the 26th General Jackson Show & Dinner Cruise sailed into new musical waters Thursday evening (2/23). Jake Owen opened with “Alone With You,” adding the concert-staple tagline of, “I can’t be your booty call.” “Thanks for changing my life,” he said before performing his first No. 1
“Barefoot Blue Jean Night.”

Newcomers included Tyler Farr performing “Hot Mess” and “Hello Goodbye,” with Kristen Kelly offering “You Love To Make Me Cry” and “Ex-Old Man.” The new Love And Theft punctuated their “Angel Eyes” and “Runaway” performance with a dual-guitarlead- Skynyrd-riff coda from picker/producer Josh Leo and Jason Jordan.

Casey James recalled thanking the boat crowd last year and only now knowing what he was really thanking them for, then played “Let’s Don’t Call It A Night” and “Crying On My Shoulder.” Banter between the hosts was lively, with Warren’s remark about Evans’ combined family drawing spirited response. “We have seven children together,” Evans said. “And I’m very happy to be here tonight.” And later: “We’re starting our own Feed The Children chapter in Birmingham.” Pickler and Evans performed at a satellite stage between main stage sets – “Stop Cheating On Me” and “100 Proof” by the former, and “Suds In The Bucket” and “Anywhere” from the latter. Josh Thompson delivered “I’m Comin’ Around” and “Way Out Here.” Kix Brooks debuted with a driving rock sound on “Let’s Do This Thing” and single “New To This Town.”

NOW Franchise Releases “NOW That’s What I Call Country Ballads”

EMI MUSIC NOW COUNTRY BALLADS

Even after 15 years, the ever-popular NOW records are still going strong, despite a decline in record sales after the emergence of iTunes. The famed NOW franchise is back with a new release, NOW That’s What I Call Country Ballads, featuring 18 monster ballads from hit-makers such as Chris Young and Kenny Chesney to Shania Twain and George Strait.

This is definitely a modern-day collection of country ballads, so if you’re expecting to find “He Stopped Loving Her Today” or “The Dance” on this record, you might be disappointed. Instead, you’ll find Sara Evans’ rendition of Edwin McCain’s “I Could Not Ask For More,” Martina McBride’s latest tear-jerker, “I’m Gonna Love You Through It,” Dierks Bentley’s risque “Come a Little Closer,” and Carrie Underwood’s take on the famous Randy Travis classic, “I Told You So.”

This album is definitely aimed towards a younger audience with songs from crossover artists like Taylor Swift, The Band Perry, and Lady Antebellum, all of whom have had just as much success on pop radio as they have in the country genre. The record also features former Hootie & the Blowfish frontman Darius Rucker’s debut single as a country artist, “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It,” which I still say is his strongest single to date.

If you’re not high-tech with all the latest MP3s and gadgets, this would be a great record to buy if you want some of the greatest country ballads released in the last 10 years or so. Or, you could just turn on your radio – I hear these songs multiple times a day, so it’s nothing new or out of the ordinary. But, like I said, it’s a good record to have on hand in the car if you want some good country slow songs. The NOW records are available wherever records are sold, including online via iTunes and Amazon.

Don’t forget to enter for your chance to win a copy of NOW That’s What I Call Country Ballads from CMTT.  CLICK HERE to enter.  Hurry!  Contest ends Thursday , February 2nd.

The Country Music Hall of Fame Partners with the American Heart Association Exhibit that Included Sara Evans, Lorrie Morgan and More

go-red-for-women1 Country Music Hall of Fame

The Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum is opening a spotlight exhibit, Something in Red, in support of the American Heart Association and Go Red For Women®. The exhibition, which will feature red ensembles from several country stars, including Sara Evans, Naomi Judd and Lorrie Morgan, will open on February 3, 2012 (National Wear Red Day), and run through April 2012.

The red dress is a symbol of the fight against heart disease in women. Several country artists have partnered with the American Heart Association and the museum to raise awareness of this disease, the number one killer of women, by making their own red dresses available for this special exhibit.

Among the dresses featured in Something in Red:

  • Sara Evans’ full-length velvet sheath with feathers, designed by Victor Costa for Nahdree and worn at the 1999 Academy of Country Music Awards
  • Naomi Judd’s leather-like jacket and skirt with bugle beading, rhinestones, and tulle crinoline, designed by Esben and Vanessa Ware and the Judds and worn at the 1987 Country Music Association Awards
  • The JaneDear girls’ Danelle Leverett’s strapless Daisy mini-dress with floral detailing, worn on the cover of the duo’s 2011 self-titled debut album; and the JaneDear girls’ Susie Brown’s shimmering cocktail dress, designed by Ryan Gamboa and worn at the 2011 Academy of Country Music Awards
  • Lorrie Morgan’s full-length Caché gown with pleated bodice and spaghetti straps, worn on the Grand Ole Opry
  • Julie Roberts’ one-shouldered, matte jersey cocktail gown with rhinestone embellishments, made by Caché and worn on the Grand Ole Opry

Spotlight exhibits supplement themes and topics in the museum’s core exhibition, Sing Me Back Home: A Journey Through Country Music. These short-term, informal displays provide a closer look at a particular person, group or aspect of country music, or they spotlight recently donated items or special anniversaries. Rotated often, spotlight exhibits also offer a glimpse into the museum’s unique collection, which includes recorded discs; historical photographs; films and videotapes; posters; books; songbooks; periodicals and sheet music; personal artifacts such as performers’ instruments, costumes and accessories; and more.

Other current spotlight exhibits focus on the Academy of Country Music Awards, Bobby Braddock, Nudie Cohn, Bill Monroe, Rascal Flatts, Reba, Jean Shepard and Porter Wagoner.
