John Rich Receives ‘Angels’ Award From St. Jude

John Rich

John Rich is the first artist to be presented the Randy Owen Angels Among Us award.  The ceremoney took place this weekend during the Country Cares For St. Jude Kids Seminar in Memphis.

The award recognizes a member of the country music industry who demonstrates an immeasurable commitment and dedication to kids battling cancer and other deadly diseases at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Last year, Rich drew national attention to the top-ranked children’s cancer research hospital when he won the hit NBC show “Celebrity Apprentice.” Rich competed on the show on behalf of St. Jude and helped raise more than $1.4 million for the organization.

“St. Jude holds a very special place in my heart,” said Rich. “It’s like no other place and I’m just so honored to help raise awareness for this organization and to receive the first-ever Angels Among Us Award from Randy.”

Owen started Country Cares for St. Jude Kids in 1989 when he appealed to his fellow country music artists, radio stations and loyal country music listeners to help support the lifesaving mission of St. Jude. Since it began, Country Cares has raised more than $400 million for St. Jude.

“This past year John really embodied what Country Cares for St. Jude Kids is all about,” said Owen. “It’s really unbelievable to look back over the past 23 years and see what the country music industry has helped us accomplish for St. Jude. This award is a way for us to say thank you to select members of the industry for their continued commitment and support.”

Randy Owen Visits with St. Jude Patients at Country Cares

The group of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital patients and their families had trouble containing their excitement at meeting country music legend Randy Owen. Grins spread wide as they entered the room and the Country Music Hall of Famer introduced himself.

And they got even wider as Randy broke into applause at seeing the children: Anthony Lawrence, 8, who is being treated for a brain tumor known as ependymoma; Ella, 7, who was diagnosed with a rare cancer of the adrenal glands; and Cassidy, 7, who is being treated for acute myeloid leukemia.

Randy’s visit is one of the highlights of the annual Country Cares for St. Jude Kids® seminar. This year’s visit was made even more special when Randy invited his fellow country music artists to join him in meeting the patients. Many artists accepted the invitation and listened as patient families explained what Country Cares has meant to them.

“We thank you for all that you and St. Jude do for us,” said Chad, Cassidy’s father. “You have given us a place to be and a place of hope.”

Randy, inspired by a meeting with St. Jude founder Danny Thomas more than 20 years ago, encouraged his fellow country music artists, their fans and country music radio stations to be part of a new effort to raise funds and awareness for St. Jude. Country Cares was born and today it is one of the most successful radio fundraising efforts in the United States.

The Grascals & Dolly Parton Are Helping to Raise Awareness for Childhood Cancer

In a rare occasion of combined efforts, Nashville’s music community is gathering is support of “I Am Strong,” a song drawing awareness to the childhood cancer epidemic.

Two versions of “I Am Strong” have been recorded. Version 1 includes award-winning, Grammy-nominated group, The Grascals, with special guest Dolly Parton. Version 2 includes The Grascals, Dolly Parton, Randy Owen, Joe Nichols, Darryl Worley, Terri Clark, Charlie Daniels, Tom T. Hall, The Oak Ridge Boys and Steven Seagal.

A music video was directed by cancer survivor David Corlew of d. corlew films.

“I Am Strong,” was written by Grascals’ band member Jamie Johnson and his wife Susanne Mumpower-Johnson along with Jenee Fleenor after The Grascals visited the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis and were inspired by the stories and power of the children being treated there. “I Am Strong” is powerful in its message and artistic vision and brings together vocals from all of the artists who also appear separately with The Grascals on other tracks on this CD.

In honor of the children and this song, Cracker Barrel is donating a percentage of the proceeds from this CD to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The album, The Grascals & Friends – Country Classics With A Bluegrass Spin, has 13 country music songs on it that you have probably heard before, but most likely not like this. The Grascals bring their own bluegrass style to the tunes and bring the different tracks to life with eight of their friends, including Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley, Charlie Daniels and Dolly Parton. The Grascals & Friends – Country Classics With A Bluegrass Spin will be available on January 10th, 2011, exclusively at all Cracker Barrel locations.
