VIDEO- Pam Tillis & Kris Thomas ‘Two Kings’

Pam Tillis and rising R&B sensation Kris Thomas have come together to record a tribute to “Two Kings,” civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the King of Rock n Roll Elvis Presley. The tribute song seamlessly blends the sounds of soul, country, pop and gospel. Appropriately releasing between the 77th birthday of the late Elvis Presley (this past Sunday, January 8th) and Martin Luther King Day (Monday, January 16th), “Two Kings” premiered yesterday exclusively on AOL’s The Boot.

“Maybe It Was Memphis” singer Pam Tillis and Memphis matriarch Brenda O’Brien wrote the song. O’Brien’s family owned the famous Memphis night club “The Plantation Inn,” which not only was known as the Memphis hot spot frequented by celebrities (including a young Elvis Presley before his fame) but also as a melting pot of races and social classes in the extreme racially charged times.

“Martin Luther’s contribution to civil rights is an unassailable matter of history and Elvis’ disregard of the division of race in music helped change it forever,” says Tillis. “My friend Brenda O’Brien, who grew up during the turblulent times of the civil rights struggle, right in the middle of the Memphis music scene, saw the connection and brought the song idea to me… all I did was help her see her vision through.”

“The message of this song is so powerful and relevant especially in our world today… and all the connections to Memphis make this song really special to me being a Memphis native,” says Thomas. “Plus being able to sing and work in the studio with Pam was such a thrill and an education for me.”

Tillis and Thomas filmed the video for the song in Memphis, Tennessee earlier this year with documentary producer Molly Secours. Additional vocals in “Two Kings” is provided by the Stax Academy Street Corner Harmonies choir. “Two Kings” is available for purchase now at all digital retail outlets.

Tillis adds, “This song is just an earnest attempt to honor each man’s legacy and ask, “what will you do to make the world a better place?”

George Jones to Celebrate 80th Birthday at Grand Ole Opry!

The Grand Ole Opry® presented by Humana® will throw an 80th birthday party for one of country music’s all-time most renowned voices, Grand Ole Opry star and Country Music Hall of Famer George Jones, during the Tuesday Night Opry Sept. 13. Among those scheduled to participate in the birthday festivities are Opry members Alan Jackson, Montgomery Gentry, Joe Diffie, Pam Tillis, and Oak Ridge Boys plus special guests Jamey Johnson, Blackberry Smoke, and Eric Lee Beddingfield.

Jones, who will turn 80 on Sept. 12, became a Grand Ole Opry member 55 years ago. His classics have stood the test of time, to say the least, including his first hit in 1955, “Why, Baby, Why,” “White Lightnin’,” “She Thinks I Still Care,” “The Grand Tour,” and “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” just to name a few.

Fans can take part in the birthday celebration by entering the Opry’s Birthday Bash Dessert Contest. To enter, fans visit the Opry on Facebook, submit their best original dessert recipe, and share with friends to get them to vote. The top three recipes will be prepared by a professional chef and judged by Jones on the night of his Opry party. One grand prize winner will receive a trip to the Opry’s Birthday Bash in October and a chance to have their dessert featured on the menu at the new Opry Backstage Grill.

The Grand Ole Opry® is presented by Humana®. Opry performances are held every weekend of the year and on Tuesdays through Dec. 13. To plan an Opry visit, call (800) SEE-OPRY or visit opry.com.

Craig Morgan’s 5th Annual Charity Weekend is a Rousing Success

Craig Morgan is understandably thrilled with the results of his 5th annual Charity Motocross Ride, Concert and Sporting Clay Shoot. The two-day’s events and auction raised more than $95,000, which is more than the last two years’ events totals combined.

Proceeds from the weekend’s activities benefit Billy’s Place, which is supporting children’s causes in Middle Tennessee and working toward building a home for temporarily displaced children in Morgan’s hometown of Dickson, just outside Nashville.

“It’s amazing how much this event has grown over the last 5 years and I’m over-the-top grateful to everyone from our celebrity friends and the Dickson and Middle Tennessee communities for their support,” says Morgan. “We raised a record high amount this year for Billy’s Place and I’m thankful for the opportunity to do more for the children and families of Dickson. I already can’t wait to do it again next year!”

The fan favorite Motocross Ride was a resounding success as riders from across the country gathered for a thrilling wooded trail ride and hill climb. Riders and spectators alike also witnessed celebrity pro riders Fred Andrews, Cowboy Kenny Bartram, Randy Hawkins and Kevin Windham exhibit their gravity defying skills. Joining Morgan for the day’s adventures were country music celebrities Bucky Covington and Sarah Darling.

New for 2011 was the sold-out celebrity Sporting Clay Shoot where Morgan, Andrews, Bartram, Covington and Hawkins tested their skills in a ten-team sporting clays competition. Later than evening, Craig and country music friends Bucky Covington, Sarah Darling, and Pam Tillis took to the stage and thrilled the crowds with a non-stop parade of hits. During the concert, a live auction took place with auction items ranging from a custom dirt bike, generously donated by Chris Bostick of Carnival Kia, to the chance to shave Craig’s hair on stage!

As Morgan wraps this year’s event and begins planning for next year, he is also excited about his new single “This Ole Boy” which was recently released by Black River Entertainment. Written by Ben Hayslip, Dallas Davidson, and Rhett Atkins, “This Ole Boy,” the title track and lead single from Craig’s new album, expected early 2012, is the perfect sing-along country love song. Fans can sing along with their very own copy at iTunes.

Morgan can also be seen in the second season of his Outdoor Channel series, “Craig Morgan All Access Outdoors,” with episodes airing throughout the year.

Pam Tillis Is ‘No Crock Betty’

Country Weekly wants to let you in on a little secret—Pam Tillis doesn’t like just making music, she loves to cook! And the celebrated country star will bring her kitchen prowess to a new cuisine column for Country Weekly.

The self-proclaimed “foodie” and “top chef wannabe” grew up around good cooking and has a history of amazing culinary explorations which she plans to share monthly with Country Weekly readers in her new column, Pam and Company. Her first column will be available in the November 22 issue, which hits newsstands November 15th. And in the spirit of Thanksgiving, Pam shares her favorite recipe for super-delicious chocolate sweet potato pie, which can also be found at Pam’s food blog at nocrockbetty.com.

Tillis says, “This is my maiden voyage as a columnist, but I think it’s going to be great fun. I’m excited to be working with Country Weekly. This column is a fantastic way to connect with the audience.”

She adds, “I will be using some of my recipes as well as others I have picked up through the years. But I want to make them accessible for the average person—keep it down to earth, but still push the envelope a little bit and make it interesting so you don’t get bored with cooking. I also want to make the dishes health-conscious. That’s very important.”

Country Weekly Editor Lisa Konicki believes the popular magazine’s constituents will appreciate Tillis’ approach to cooking.

“Our readers are always looking for fun, accessible recipes and they love and respect Pam for her country music heritage—it’s a perfect combination,” Konicki says. “Welcome to Country Weekly, Pam.”
