Earl Scruggs Remembered at Funeral Services In Nashville

Earl Scruggs

Friends and family are remembering Earl Scruggs as a pioneering musician who invented the modern way to play the banjo. Scruggs died at the age of 88. More than 2,000 people attended a public funeral for Scruggs at the Ryman Auditorium.

Charlie Daniels told the crowd that “no one will ever play the banjo like Earl.” Ricky Skaggs called Scruggs the “most humble musician” he ever met. The closed casket sat just below the Ryman stage, with a banjo behind it. A dozen floral arrangements decorated the stage. Performers during the service included Del McCoury, Skaggs, Bela Fleck, Emmylou Harris, Vince Gill, Marty Stuart and Patty Loveless.
