Brad, Keith, & Vince to Pay Tribute to Glen Campbell at CMA Awards

Brad Paisley, Vince Gill, and Keith Urban will pay tribute to Country Music Hall of Fame member and former CMA Entertainer of the Year Glen Campbell during “The 45th Annual CMA Awards.” The three guitar virtuosos’ performance saluting the legendary singer/musician will be a highlight of “Country Music’s Biggest Night(tm).”

Campbell was named both CMA Entertainer and Male Vocalist of the Year in 1968, and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005. The legendary performer has sold more than 45 million albums and recorded such classic hits as “Wichita Lineman,” “Gentle On My Mind,” “Galveston,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Southern Nights,” and “Rhinestone Cowboy.” As a musician, Campbell was part of the much-heralded Wrecking Crew that performed on a variety of artists’ albums. His guitar prowess is featured on the Beach Boys’ seminal album Pet Sounds and on Frank Sinatra’s megahit “Strangers in the Night,” among others. He acted alongside John Wayne in the movie “True Grit,” and hosted “The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour” on television from 1968-1972. Earlier this year, Campbell announced he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. He is in the midst of his successful Goodbye Tour after releasing his final album, the critically-acclaimed Ghost on the Canvas.

“The 45th Annual CMA Awards,” hosted by Paisley and Carrie Underwood, airs live from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Wednesday, November 9th on ABC.

Glen Campbell Opens Up about His Battle with Alzheimer’s

In his first television interview since being diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, legendary country musician Glen Campbell sits down for a conversation with ABC’s Terry Moran for an interview to air tonight on “World News with Diane Sawyer.” This story has personal significance for Moran — Alzheimer’s runs in his family; both his mother and grandmother died of the disease.

Glen Campbell’s music is part of the American soundtrack. His biggest hits, like “Rhinestone Cowboy” and “Wichita Lineman,” plus countless others, have been heard by millions all over the world.

His guitar playing is so inventive, Frank Sinatra wanted him for his hit “Strangers in the Night,” and so did the Beach Boys — he was featured in their song “Fun, Fun, Fun.”

“I have been blessed, I really have,” Campbell said. “I really have, I figured it out that I’m not that bright, but God gave me a break.”

Now, at 75, Campbell is struggling to remember that blessed life. He is fighting Alzheimer’s. It is a battle he and all those who share this disease cannot win.

“I wasn’t a big star,” he said.

We disagreed, telling him, “You are a big star,”

“Well, it’s still the same size,” Campbell countered with a laugh. “That’s, ah, what was I saying? I’m going to be right in the middle of a sentence, man — and it just goes, pew.”

Campbell and his wife of nearly 30 years, Kim Woollen, spoke with ABC News in their Malibu home for their first television interview since sharing the news that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

“I hadn’t gotten it yet,” Campbell said. “In fact, I don’t even know where it came from.”

“Yes, you’ve been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s,” Woollen said to her husband.

“What? I haven’t felt it yet,” Campbell said, laughing. “I’ve always been forgetful anyway. I’m only what, 78?”
“75,” corrected Woollen.

“Oh, so I’ve got a couple more.”

We suggested that Campbell’s decision to embark on a new tour is not only unusual, it’s brave, because so many people, facing such a hard diagnosis, would turn all their focus to their health.

“I don’t know how brave it is,” Campbell said.

Sometimes it’s Campbell’s wife who acts as his memory.

“I just take care of him, which is a big job,” she said. “We’d been noticing short term memory loss for quite some time. You know, he repeats himself. Tells the same joke several times in a row.”

“Well, yeah, it’s funny,” Campbell joked.

“He’ll tell a joke, laugh at it and a few minutes later tell the same joke, laugh, and then we laugh at him because he’s just enjoying it so much,” Woollen said. “You just make the best of each day and try not to worry about tomorrow.”

“Definitely take care of what’s today and tomorrow’s going to have what it has,” Campbell said.

“There’s a verse in the bible that says, ‘If the man findeth a good wife he’s found a good thing,’ and I found a good thing, or she found me,” he said. “Did you find me or did I find you?”

“I think we found each other,” Woollen said.

“That’s what we did,” he said. “Amen.”

Hard Childhood Leads to Hard Drinking

In the old days, Campbell was a hard-drinking lover of country, a child of Arkansas poverty.

“Oh I love to play the guitar and I love to sing,” he said. “I found out real quick you know, looking at a mule in the rump and gathering corn and picking cotton…I figured out real quick that that was work. I wanted to do something that didn’t have so much work attached to it.”

Like many Alzheimer’s patients, he can still remember the years gone by — starting out as a teenager in the early 1950s.

“In Albuquerque, N.M., they had a noon-day roundup thing and I was playing on it. Oh boy I was high cotton,” Campbell said. He starts singing: “riding down the trail to Albuquerque, saddle bags all filled with beans and jerky. Working for the circle bee the TV ranch for you and me, circle bee in Albuquerque.”

Later in his life Campbell was a drinker, but he stopped cold turkey — until a reported relapse in November 2003. He was famously arrested for drunk driving in Phoenix, Ariz.

“I think the lord allowed him to get arrested and that shook him up and woke him up and he stopped cold turkey again,” Woollen said.

“I tell you it’s … I’ve been sober the last … thank you lord, that’s what I say,” Campbell said. “Thank you lord for giving me another chance.”

Goodbye Tour

Now there will be one final album, “Ghost on the Canvas,” and one last tour to say goodbye to all of us. There to help him are three of his children. Ashley on keyboards, Shannon on guitar and Cal on drums — all by his side.

“I really like to play. I really like to play guitar,” Campbell said.

“Music is a natural memory aid, and we’re finding out, we think it really does help his memory and help keep him from declining,” Woollen said. “So it’s really good for him and all the love he gets from all the fans is really encouraging, so that’s why we want to do it as long as we can, because it’s healthy for all of us. Music is good medicine.”

He wants to keep giving to others as long as he can.

When asked what his favorite song is, Campbell begins to softly sing.

“I am a lineman for the county and I drive the main road… Oh, that’s a great song,” he said. “I need you more than want you, and I’ll want you for all times. The Wichita lineman is still on the line. — That’s a great song, boy.”

It sure is.

Glen Campbell Diagnosed With Alzheimer’s Disease

Glen Campbell and his wife Kim have revelaed to People.com  in an exclusive interview the unfortunate news of  his alzheimer’s diagnosis.  One of the reasons for going public with his diagnosis was to let fans know of the condition but also because Glen is making plans for a farewell tour this fall.

“Glen is still an awesome guitar player and singer,” says Kim. “But if he flubs a lyric or gets confused on stage, I wouldn’t want people to think, ‘What’s the matter with him? Is he drunk?’”

The Grammy-winner, whose “Rhinestone Cowboy” topped the charts in 1975, had been suffering from short-term memory loss for years, but the Alzheimer’s diagnosis only came six months ago.

“I still love making music,” says Campbell. “And I still love performing for my fans. I’d like to thank them for sticking with me through thick and thin.”

For more of the interview with Glenn you can pick up the new issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday.
