Dixie Chicks & Willie Nelson to Perform Benefit Concerts for Texas

Willie Nelson, the Dixie Chicks, Lyle Lovett, and Asleep at the Wheel will perform at Fire Relief: The Concert for Central Texas at the Frank Erwin Center October 17th along with special guests Eric Johnson, Steve Miller, Joe Satriani, Shawn Colvin and the Court Yard Hounds and the Texas Tornados. Emcees for the evening will include Kyle Chandler and Turk Pipkin.

Tickets will go on sale Friday, September 23rd at noon and are $25, $35, $100 and $250 VIP. The VIP ticket price includes premium seating and access to the VIP Lounge in the Lone Star Room. There will also be a silent auction with specialty items autographed by the artists, and T-shirts with the concert’s logo for sale.

The University of Texas, Frank Erwin Center, The Messina Group, Austin Community Foundation and the all-star lineup of Texas musicians organized the concert to help raise money for victims of the late-summer central Texas wildfires. Losses are estimated to reach $250 million, and the fires outside Bastrop destroyed more homes than any wildfire in Texas history. Many of the short-term needs of the people affected by the fires have already been met; the goal of Fire Relief is to help them with long-term issues and problems, such as regaining livelihoods. All of the proceeds will be dispersed to central Texas community organizations and charities via the Central Texas Wildfire Fund at the Austin Community Foundation.

Taylor Swift Covers Dixie Chicks for a Dixie Chick

Taylor Swift
has been covering songs left and right during her Speak Now tour. This past weekend in Newark, NJ, Taylor performed the Dixie Chicks song “Cowboy Take Me Away.” However, this time she performed the song in front of the original artist. Martie Maguire was at Taylor’s show with her twin 7 year old girls.

“You know, everybody who plays an instrument remembers that first song they ever learned on guitar. And I feel so lucky because my very first memory of the first song I ever wanted to learn to play on guitar was this beautiful, gorgeous song by the Dixie Chicks called ‘Cowboy Take Me Away.’ Does anybody know the words to that song?,” she asked the screaming fans. Then she added, “I happen to be looking at Martie Maguire, who wrote that song. The amazing, amazing fiddle player for the Dixie Chicks. She’s here tonight.”

CMT to Premier The Dixie Chicks “Shut Up & Sing”

Love them or hate them, the Dixie Chicks were a country force to be reckoned with until it all came crashing down in 2003 when lead singer, Natalie Maines, uttered critical words towards then President George W. Bush that would forever change their lives and alter the group’s success. With long lasting ramifications, the Dixie Chicks have still been all but banned from country radio and continue to fuel heated debate among country purists and free speech activists alike. For the first time, CMT is broadcasting the documentary Shut Up & Sing, which explores this controversy and the making of their 2006 album Taking the Long Way, as part of CMT #1 Music and a Movie on Saturday, March 26 at 9:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m., ET/PT.

Shut Up & Sing, features footage from 2003 during the peak of the conflict, as well as footage of the group recording their critically-acclaimed album Taking The Long Way that featured the single “Not Ready To Make Nice” which took aim at the backlash.
