Every once in a while, you’re sitting at a local joint, enjoying some local music, when you see a kid sitting on a stool with a guitar…and you know someday…she’s gonna be a star. That’s what I thought a couple of weeks ago when I went to a guitar student showcase for Johnny Guitars at Three Brothers Cafe in Murfreesboro. At just 15 years old, Hunter Wolkonowski took the stage like it was no big deal, sang a couple of songs including an original like it was no big thing, and left the audience picking their jaws up off the floor.
Hunter wrote the song, “So Long,” with Courtney Holder…She performs it like a seasoned veteran and her songwriting skills are nothing short of spectacular for such a young age. “You treated our love like an old pair of shoes…two worn out soles with nothing to lose.”
So, I’m taking it upon myself it introduce Hunter to the masses.
When did you start showing real interest in singing?
I’ve been singing in my Pa’s church since the age of three. He’s a preacher. I was always the first to get up on Sunday and sing a song. My family said the microphone was bigger than I was!
Who do you compare yourself to?
I’ve never really thought about comparing myself to anyone, but I do like a lot of the contemporary country artists today like: Jennifer Nettles, Kacey Musgraves, and Miranda Lambert.
Who are your musical idols?
I will always love Patsy Cline, but I also love Adele and Dolly since they write their own music like I do.
What is your ultimate musical goal?
My musical goal would have to be performing live at the CMA’s. That would be amazing!
What is your all time favorite song?
My favorite song would have to be “Crazy” by Patsy Cline. I grew up listening to her because of my Grandmother. She played her music all the time! When we weren’t listening to Patsy Cline, it was Elvis, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, or Dolly Parton.
Who taught you to play guitar and sing?
I could always kind of play by ear, but then I started taking guitar, bass, and voice lessons at Johnny Guitars in Murfreesboro, TN. My instructor is Jimmie McEachern, and he’s the greatest ever!
What do you plan to do after high school?
I’m going to move to Nashville, TN, and hopefully attend Belmont University and study music.
Who is your dream to go on tour with?
Anyone who would have me!
