10 Quick Quirky Questions with Charlie Starr of Blackberry Smoke

Q:  Video games or books?
A:  Books. My video game skills died with nintendo.

Q:  What’s the most personal song you’ve ever written? Did it make it on your album?

A:  When I look closely at them, I guess all my songs are pretty personal. “Prayer For The Little Man” was on our last album, and it’s very personal. A song called “The Whippoorwill” will be on our new album, and it really moves me because it is about memories of my Grandmother.

Q:  If you could duet with any artist of a different genre, who would it be?

A:  That’s a tough one, there are so many.I would love to sing with Norah Jones, Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Robert Plant, Levon Helm….

Q:  Do you collect anything? If yes, what do you collect?

A:  Brown suede shoes. Apparently I have a real problem with it, according to Brit, our drummer.

Q:  Do you have any habits you wish you could break?
A:  Smoking cigarettes and losing my temper.

Q:   Do you have any hidden talents we don’t know about?
A:  I’m a dancing fool.

Q:  What is your is your favorite song to belt out at the bar? In the car? At karaoke?
A:  Brit, Gene and I are fond of making up silly ass songs on the spot, and singing them for all to hear.

Q:  Finish this sentence: Ten years from now I will be…..
A:  Making music.

Q:  What is the hardest obstacle you have had to overcome?
A:  Waiting for the music business. I have not yet overcome it. I’m impatient. You could add that to the “bad habit” deal as well, I guess.

Q:  If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and what would say to them?
A:  The Dalai Lama. I would say, “Yo, Lama…how bout a little something…ya know…for the effort…”

Lionel Richie to Debut Country Duets from Upcoming Album at the 45th Annual CMA Awards

Lionel Richie will release Tuskegee, his much-anticipated country duets album, in March on Mercury Nashville, after debuting songs on the national broadcast of the 45th Annual Country Music Association Awards, airing live Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. ET on the ABC Television Network.

During the broadcast Richie will perform select duets of his runaway hits with Little Big Town, Darius Rucker and Rascal Flatts.

Surpassing his creative and personal boundaries, Richie comes full circle with the innovative and personal Tuskegee, performing 13 of his most revered “anthems of our day” with some of the biggest names in country music, including Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles, Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, Darius Rucker, Rascal Flatts, Kenny Chesney, Billy Currington, Little Big Town and Jason Aldean.  On this worldwide, multi-genre album, Richie is also joined by the likes of such superstars as Shania Twain, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson and Jimmy Buffett.

Tuskegee is an exciting and transcendent arc in a career that has seen album sales of more than 100 million, 22 Top 10s, five Grammys, an Academy Award for Best Original Song, a Golden Globe, and a host of other awards from virtually every major entertainment organization.

While defying boundaries and breaking barriers throughout his storied career, Richie reveals once again that Tuskegee will join the ranks of his timeless body of work that touches people of all faiths, ages and demographics across the world.

“As my songwriting progressed, I realized that my songs perfectly translated to the country genre,” says the living legend as he taps on the keys of the piano in his state-of-the-art recording studio.

It was when Conway Twitty sang “Three Times a Lady” along with songs such as “Lady” and “Deep River Women” that Richie knew country music was clearly omnipresent in the lyrics he wrote.

“I was born and raised in Tuskegee, Alabama. I am a country boy and proud of it. To do this project just felt natural,” says Richie. “Growing up with country, R&B, gospel, and classical music from my grandmother and pop, Tuskegee was the perfect melting pot for my influences as a writer,” he says, “and the title, Tuskegee, is a validation of my growing up there—the place I call home.”  “Tuskegee is a state of mind as it is a place,” he adds, “…a place of possibility, hope, promise, self-empowerment, and where dreams come true.”

Lionel Richie’s Tuskegee Track-Listing:
1. “You Are” with Blake Shelton
2. “Say You, Say Me” with Jason Aldean
3. “Stuck On You” with Darius Rucker
4. “Deep River Woman” with Little Big Town

George Jones to Celebrate 80th Birthday at Grand Ole Opry!

The Grand Ole Opry® presented by Humana® will throw an 80th birthday party for one of country music’s all-time most renowned voices, Grand Ole Opry star and Country Music Hall of Famer George Jones, during the Tuesday Night Opry Sept. 13. Among those scheduled to participate in the birthday festivities are Opry members Alan Jackson, Montgomery Gentry, Joe Diffie, Pam Tillis, and Oak Ridge Boys plus special guests Jamey Johnson, Blackberry Smoke, and Eric Lee Beddingfield.

Jones, who will turn 80 on Sept. 12, became a Grand Ole Opry member 55 years ago. His classics have stood the test of time, to say the least, including his first hit in 1955, “Why, Baby, Why,” “White Lightnin’,” “She Thinks I Still Care,” “The Grand Tour,” and “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” just to name a few.

Fans can take part in the birthday celebration by entering the Opry’s Birthday Bash Dessert Contest. To enter, fans visit the Opry on Facebook, submit their best original dessert recipe, and share with friends to get them to vote. The top three recipes will be prepared by a professional chef and judged by Jones on the night of his Opry party. One grand prize winner will receive a trip to the Opry’s Birthday Bash in October and a chance to have their dessert featured on the menu at the new Opry Backstage Grill.

The Grand Ole Opry® is presented by Humana®. Opry performances are held every weekend of the year and on Tuesdays through Dec. 13. To plan an Opry visit, call (800) SEE-OPRY or visit opry.com.
