Mindy McCready Remembered at Nashville Memorial

Mindy McCready

A couple of weeks ago, Mindy McCready’s friends and family got the chance to say goodbye to her at a private memorial service.  Yesterday, it was a time for her friends in the music industry to do the same.

About 200 people were on hand for the memorial to the singer, who committed suicide last month. She was 37 — and through her time in the spotlight struggled with drug and booze addiction and a series of bad relationships.

Old friends Bryan White, Lorrie Morgan and Bekka Bramlett sang for McCready and family members spoke about her difficulties and triumphs during the hour-long remembrance Wednesday at the Cathedral of the Incarnation.

“She achieved many of her dreams with No. 1 records and fame,” said singer Lorrie Morgan, a former label mate of McCready’s. “But we all know fame and fortune do not ensure happiness.”

The Nashville memorial comes two weeks after her funeral. That was held at her hometown of Fort Myers, Florida.

Mindy McCready Laid to Rest

Mindy McCready

Today, in front of 400 close friends and family, Mindy McCready was laid to rest in Ft. Myers, Florida. According to People, the celebration of life ceremony was planned by Mindy’s mother and included a large photograph of the singer looking happy.

“Mindy adored her two children. She wanted them to know that. Through much agony and pain, she went to heaven. She is no longer sick. She is healed. Thank you for all who are here. Please pray for those boys. No matter what, she will always be my little girl, sitting in her car seat, singing into a hairbrush. The world was her stage.”

Mindy’s three brothers, Timothy, Joshua and Skyler acted as pallbearers while her step-father performed Bobby Helms’s “You Are My Special Angel.”

Our family is devastated by the loss of our beautiful and talented daughter. Her life, no matter how brief, touched many, and she will forever be our special angel,” said her mother Gayle.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Mindy McCready Children’s Trust, c/o John Ammons, Edison National Bank, 13000 S. Cleveland Ave., Ft. Myers, FL 33907.

Mindy McCready Recounted Tragic Events with Friend the Day Before Her Death

Mindy McCready

Just one day before she died, Mindy McCready contacted her friend and private investigator, Danno Hanks, to discuss the events of the past few weeks. Danno always recorded their conversations and E News has gained exclusive rights to the recording.

Audibly distraught, Mindy tearfully recounts finding her boyfriend, David Wilson’s body limp in their Arkansas home from a gunshot wound.

He was lying on the ground with his brains all over the floor,” McCready says. “And then I held him and I kissed him and I told him I forgave him. And I said, ‘David, none of this means anything. You didn’t have to do this. Please, don’t die. Please. We love you so much. Please don’t die.’”

“But he was trying to tell me something,” McCready continues. “He was grabbing me and trying to talk. Of course he couldn’t talk at that point, half of his brain was on the floor.”

She also gets more upset when describing how the police wouldn’t allow her to join David in the hospital for the two hours before he eventually died from his wounds.

“kept me from spending two hours with him that would’ve been the most precious hours of my life with him.”

After his death, Mindy struggled to grieve and take care of her boys. When questions arose on whether or not Mindy played a party in her boyfriend’s death, Mindy was ordered to treatment, and then obviously let out too soon.

Then they come and take my kids after this… while we’re all trying to heal and everybody’s trying to get over this was the cruelest, most awful situation I’ve ever seen. I just can’t imagine it.”

The hopelessness is so apparent in the phone call. I imagine coming home to the place her boyfriend and she shared with her children…Only there were no children…no boyfriend…just Mindy and her thoughts. Hopeless is probably exactly how she felt.

You can hear the conversation here.

Hanks also says he was worried about Mindy during the days leading up to her suicide.  She had recently recorded a song called “See You Yesterday,” and she wanted Hanks to make a video for it after David died. However, Hanks viewed it as almost a suicide note.  But Mindy had insisted it was in memory of her late boyfriend.

I don’t know [at what point she decided to take her own life],” the private eye said. “She started sending me these pictures a couple of days ago and she wanted to put together this video…I’m gonna tell you, she wanted me to put the video out there.”

The song was produced by David Wilson, Mindy’s late boyfriend.
