After releasing a few singles under her given name ‘Margaret Durante,’ Maggie Rose has released a debut bound to impress. Released the same week as a Thompson Square and Blake Shelton album, Maggie has fallen behind the two in press, but “Cut to Impress” is a 10 song disc that would give either act a run for their money.
The album has so far produced two singles, “I Ain’t Your Mama” and “Better.” The first of which is a light hearted, up-beat tune that sailed into the top 25 on radio. “Better” is the latest single which is currently making it’s way up the charts. This song shows a more serious side of Maggie. The combination of her soulful voice and tradition country instrumental are bound to cause this song to break the top 20 in the charts.
Having co-written almost half of the tracks, Maggie Rose creates the perfect flow of love. Self-proclaimed as a “rock-soul country artist,” this CD is full of a country charm while still differentiating herself from anything else in country music right now. Matt Bjorke of Roughstock calls the attitude that Maggie Rose shows as a mix between Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert, which I would consider the perfect mix between heart and sass.
Some stand out tracks for me include the quick, fun “Mostly Bad” in which Maggie lays out all of the sides the she can hold, but yet she’s ‘mostly bad.’ “Hollywood” pokes fun at mainstream lifestyles while exemplifying the highlights of country life. One of my favorites is a song that show’s a strong side while starting a relationship called “Fall Madly In Love With You.” This is one song that you just can’t get out of your head after listening to the disc. “Goodbye Monday” closes off the disc with a bang. Everyone know’s the feeling of the Monday blues, but one listen to this song will leave you ready to get on with the week.
Throughout the album, there are no low points. She set out for a “Cut to Impress” and I would say Maggie Rose is able to do just that in this disc. For $9 you can get the CD at Walmart or $10 a download on iTunes. No matter how you get it, you better get this disc! You will definitely want to pick up your copy.
