It turns out the album was a true tribute to Nathaniel, who passed away. “Bronco” was a way for Canaan to heal he tells The Tennesseans‘s Cindy Watts. Turns out, his brother died on impact in a rollover accident in his bronco.
“I started going for it,” he said. “Since then, it’s been second nature to me to just focus on talking about life in songs. I’ve made it a point to be honest with the lyric and go for more and try to connect to people through my story by telling my story.”
I wanted people to see a snapshot into the person that I am on the first album, beyond the sound of my music,” Smith said. “I couldn’t do that without being vulnerable and telling them the most pivotal point in my story — losing my brother. I wanted to tell people about Nathaniel.”
