Tim McGraw’s Sandy Hook Benefit Controversy Seems to Have Faded

tim mcgraw

Tim McGraw is just days away from his benefit concert for a Newtown charity that is trying to prevent another Sandy Hook tragedy, and it seems that little remains of the backlash that occurred when he agreed to do the show.

No evidence exists that fans who support gun-ownership rights are staying away from Tim’s Shotgun Rider tour as some threatened in April when he agreed to sing for Sandy Hook Promise.

Sandy Hook Promise, which is led by several people who lost loved ones in the 2012 slaying of 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School, has said little about the concert.

“We are allowing the McGraw camp to do all the commenting on this.” said James Belden, operations and finance director for Sandy Hook Promise.

Tim was critical in his response to critics who called him a hypocrite for being a gun owner and siding with a group lobbying for gun control.

“As a gun owner I support gun ownership,” he said. “I also believe that with gun ownership comes the responsibility of education and safety — most certainly when it relates to what we value most, our children.”

Sandy Hook Promise did have to issue a statement in April clarifying that proceeds from the event would go to Sandy Hook Promise and not to the families of the shooting victims. The statement was necessary because families of 11 victims who were not involved in Sandy Hook Promise issued a news release of their own to clear up confusion about where the benefit money was going.

Aside from Billy Currington dropping out of the show under pressure from outraged fans, there has been little controversy.
