5 Quick Holiday Questions with Steve Wariner
Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Even though my Grandmother would always want to put “a little something” in my egg nog, I would have to go with Hot Chocolate. (“Grandma! I’m only 12”)! Nothing better than piping hot chocolate with melting marshmallows on a cold winter day!
What is Your Favorite Holiday Tradition? The big tradition for us is pretty simple. We go up to Kentucky to visit my father, sister and brother and his family right before Christmas. My brother and family from Indiana are usually there too! We exchange presents, have a lot of laughs and food then head back to Tennessee after a couple of days. My wife Caryn always has homemade bread for everyone. She then makes sugar cookies right around Christmas. The smells in the house are just wonderful! Our son Ross comes from NY and brings his cat Albi. Our son Ryan lives in East Nashville so he’s here. Holly and Kev from San Francisco are usually here! There’s the usual Christmas movies we watch a couple days out: “Elf,” “A Christmas Story,” “It’s A Wonderful Life” and more. We exchange presents in the morning, stop for “half time” and eat breakfast, then finish with presents. Then we celebrate my birthday (which is also Dec. 25) later that evening. (Caryn is so careful to not let birthday and Christmas criss cross too much). It’s really about all of us just being together and enjoying that time!
What was your favorite Christmas present as a child? This will surely date me, but as a young guy I really wanted the Navy GI Joe! It was the first year they came out. I remember those TV commercials so well. My Father was in the Navy so it was a big deal. Now fast forward many years: Allyn Love, my steel guitar player’s father, was the guy who made those commercials in NYC! I thought I’d lost that GI Joe over the years, but a few years ago my Mother pulled it from her old cedar chest and gave it back to me!! He’s here now safe and sound. It brings back some beautiful memories.
How did you learn the truth about Santa Claus? My older brother Kenny spilled the beans for me about Santa. I remember it well! Otherwise, I could have gone another year or two. I didn’t want to believe it (though I suspected, I suppose). He and I peeked and saw Mom and Dad putting toys out. I pretended awhile longer that I had no idea. Thanks a lot big bro! Lol
What is Your Favorite Christmas Song? When it’s said and done, I think “White Christmas” is my all-time favorite! Irving Berlin wrote a masterpiece as far as I’m concerned. I love what it says, how it makes you feel, and of course the beautiful melody. Can’t get much better!
