Toby Keith Has a No Gun Policy at Restaurant in Virginia

I certainly never would have expected this from Toby Keith.

Toby’s I Love This Bar and Grill opened in Woodbridge, Virginia this week with a sign on the door: “No guns permitted.”  The gun friendly state of Virginia allows a person with a concealed carry handgun permit to carry a gun “onto the premises of any restaurant or club” which has a license to sell alcohol, provided the permit holder does not “consume an alcoholic beverage while on the premises.”

According to, there are plenty of would-be patrons who “posted their displeasure with [the no-gun] rule on the restaurant’s Facebook page” on December 23.

One user wrote, “That sign on the door means that I will never try your restaurant … It is a cultural thing among we Americans … It is the fact that you seek to restrict a Constitutional Right that bothers the public. This is what will cost you.”

Another user commented, “I am now ashamed to say I was ever a fan of yours [T]oby. You truly are a hypocrite.”

On December 24, all the posts complaining about the no gun rule had been deleted.

I’ve been disappointed in TK because of all his drinking songs, like “get drunk & be somebody” and “get my drink on”, but I applaud him on his decision here. As a Vietnam vet, I’ve always appreciated his support of our troops.

I’m not sure why people are saying he’s denying them their Constitutional right. The Constitution protects your right to bear arms as a “well regulated militia”. A militia is a group of citizens that join forces against the government or state. I don’t believe Toby Keith nor his restaurant is a “government or state”, so no rights are being violated here. He has the right to refuse weapons in his establishment, the same as I have the right to ban them from my home if I choose.
