His latest project, “To All the Girls…” just goes to prove why Willie Nelson is one of the greats. The album features an array of women from various musical backgrounds singing duets with the country icon. It is chalked full of standards and covers from country all the way to jazz and exemplifies pure talent from beginning to end.
The album features 18 tracks and kicks off with “From Here to the Moon and Back” featuring the one and only Dolly Parton. What better way can an album possibly start? While both of their voices are one of a kind, they have a way of perfectly blending together making this song one to remember. Up next is another country duet partner. Miranda Lambert and Willie tackle “She Was No Good for Me” which has a throwback country feel and showcases Miranda’s ability to connect with anything she sings. The upbeat “Bloody Mary Morning” finds Wynonna and Willie trading fast paced lyrics and “Somewhere Between” features Loretta Lynn sounding just like the legend that she is. She will command your attention on this song, and hearing two legends (Willie and Loretta) singing together makes a country music lover’s ears smile. On Willie’s classic song, “Always On My Mind,” Carrie Underwood joins him for one the albums biggest highlights. Her voice suits the song perfectly and it just reinforces what a truly amazing vocalist she is.
Other country music women also join Willie including, Sheryl Crow, Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss and more. In addition Willie welcomes a diverse range of other artists such as the immensely talented Norah Jones, Mavis Staples, Brandi Carlile and more. The most moving thing about this album is its caliber of talent. Every song and every singer featured is noteworthy. While I wasn’t extremely familiar with a few of the artists, it didn’t matter. They still captivated my attention with the stellar performance they gave with Willie. The album has no gimmicks; it really just features great singers doing what they do best. Albums like this aren’t very common and they are a treasure. Willie Nelson has the creative ability to pick the right songs, and pick the right people to sing with. He has done both of those things on “To All the Girls…” and he also sounds just as good as ever. The album is available NOW and I would recommend giving it a listen.
