As Susan Sarandon walked on stage at Sunday night”s 2nd Annual Heifer International Beyond Hunger: A Place at the Table gala, to a standing ovation, you could see the pride in her eyes. Sarandon would accept the Noble Globe Award for her work with the organization. What started 17 years prior with an appearance on “Rosie” with a Heifer, culminated in this evening. Sarandon was introduced by her daughter, Eva Amurri Martino who lovingly spoke about her mother and the lessons her mother taught her over the years. When Sarandon stepped up to accept her honor, she fondly recalled a trip into the field in Cambodia with Heifer International in 2011. During the trip she and her daughter played witness to a gift giving ceremony. During the ceremony the villagers were passing on the gift of livestock to another family, a family that would raise it, live off of it and eventually gift it’s offspring to another family. Following Ms. Saradon’s acceptance of the honor, The Band Perry took the stage to perform for guests. Their rousing performance, which began with “Pioneer” and ended with “Done” had the crowd on their feet and dancing. At one point in the event, Kimberly stopped the performance to tell Ms. Diane Lane, who was in the audience, that she wrote the song “Die Young” with her character, Cherry, from “The Outsiders” in mind. She explained to Ms. Lane that she always wanted to be like Cherry and dye her hair red.
Attendees included Event honoree Susan Sarandon, Musical Performers The Band Perry (Kimberly, Neil and Reid Perry), Lucy Schwartz and Johnny Hanson, and Jon McLaughlin and event co-hosts Geena Davis, Eva Amurri Martino & Kyle Martino; dinner committee members Diane Lane, Serinda Swan; and Bruno Tonioli.
