Naomi Judd is Slamming the CMT Awards Due to Lack of George Jones Tribute

In a letter to The Tennesseean, country singer Naomi Judd took aim at the 2013 CMT Music Awards, ripping the awards show for not staying true to country music — and for short changing George Jones’ death with an less than empathetic tribute.

George Jones is to country music what The Beatles are to pop, the Rolling Stones to rock, Elvis to rockabilly, Mozart to classical and Aretha to soul.

Yet, the “Country” Music Television awards show allowed only a “by the way” mention of Jones’ death and legacy. Incongruously, they chose alternative music group the Mavericks to perform their short version of George’s “The Race Is On.”
True country music fans are a loyal bunch and are passionate about our roots and heritage.
Every year, CMT includes artists of unrelated genres, many of whom some country music fans don’t even know. I suggest the CMT Awards show change its name. Perhaps to “the Multi-Genre Awards Show, Featuring Artists under 30.”
I realize speaking out will cause me to now be forever banned by CMT. But I’m tired of folks messing with my country music. Especially when it involves my dear friend George Jones.

Did you watch the 2013 CMT Awards?  Do you think they are moving away too much from the music?

Yes I thought exactly the same thing. All the outfits and the sets and the other genres of music pushing their way in. It really isn’t country on that show any more. And the hosting was AWEFUL!

When I’m looking for the latest country music, I always end up in one spot – 103.1 WIRK. I was even lucky enough to catch up with Keith Van Allen in the streets and got free ‘Rib Round Up’ tickets. Just one of the many events that keep me tuned into

I agree with Naomi! I was at the awarsd show and also CMA Festival where we endured 40 minutes of Lenny Kravitz at the expense of the County Stars that were scheduled to appear. I will not be going back!

Well said Naomi!!! I’m not a fan of CMT at all, last I heard CMT stood for Country Music Television, now they’ve got Dog and Beth, all these non country people like Nelly playing everyday on the station. It’s pitaful.

Kathy, I was pissed off when I had sit thru the 40 minute set of Lenny Kravitz at the fest, I paid for Country Music and that’s what I expected to get, and pissed me off even more when they cut the other country artsit short. I was pissed!

Spoken like a the lady she is. I would’ve used a little stronger language. I do a COUNTRY Morning radio show, and like many of you I get so sick and tired of hearing the same ol’ same ol’ day in and day out. What we are categorizing today as COUNTRY I was playing 30 years ago as POP. Give me some fiddles and steel guitars. Just Sayin’

CMT and the Nashville Music Machine have grown completely away from Country Music, in fact I would say they have done everything they could to kill country music. They want only cross over artist so they can make more money. What they call new country now is nothing but rock and hip-hop. Even the AMC is nothing but rock and that is sad. I have come to the conclusion that all the real country artist have move to Texas where they still play country!

  7. Seconds after the 5 second tribute to Mr. Jones I made a very rude comment about CMT not honoring the real King Of country music. I had not watched sine they told Jones to go back home, and after this last show I will never watch it ever again.

Way to much talent in nashville, to come up with a CMT show such as this one. Just KEEP it Country and in nashville. we dont need actors and actress s from hollywood passing out awards. have enough country stars .
