Last week on “American Idol” (March 20th) the music of The Beatles took over the stage. The contestants had to belt out tunes from one of the most accomplished and popular bands of all time…a tall order indeed. In fact, some of the contestants are so young they were unfamiliar with the songs making the task all that more difficult. While the country hopefuls had to step out of their box, they all put their own spin on these classics.
Stand out performer and one of the judge’s favorites, Kree Harrison, once again knocked the socks off everyone with her powerful rendition of “With a Little Help From My Friends.” This girl sure knows how to capture the audience’s attention. Once again it was all praise from the judges basically telling Kree she can sing anything and make it sound effortless. I must say I tend to agree; she is definitely one to keep watching.
Paul Jolley came out and tried his hand at The Beatles very well known “Eleanor Rigby.” While I though Paul gave it a valiant effort, the judges were left slightly unimpressed with Paul’s performance. In fact, they even mentioned that they didn’t really see his voice fitting in the country genre.
Janelle Arthur, a contestant who definitely sings showing her country roots, took on a lesser-known song than the others going with “I Will.” Janelle came out and sang this song beautifully getting the judges to sit up and listen. They were very impressed with Janelle even telling her it was one of the best performances of the night.
When Thursday (March 21st) rolled around it was the night the contestants dread…elimination night. While Janelle and Kree earned enough of America’s votes to stay in the competition, Paul’s fate was different. He landed at the bottom and had to sing for his life trying to get the judges to use the season’s only “save” on him. Well…. it was a great effort as he belted out Heart’s “Alone,” but apparently not enough as he was eliminated. That leaves just two country contestants left…let’s see what Janelle Arthur and Kree Harrison do this week!
