Week two on “American Idol” we finally saw that much publicized “fight” between Nicki and Mariah, but more importantly we saw a lot of country contestants show up and show off their amazing voices. Week one was the week of the young female contestant, however week two brought us 6 country hopefuls to keep an eye on…three ladies and three guys!
We had the 25 year-old Tennessean Jimmy Smith wowing the judges with his rendition of “God Bless the Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts, who also cited Keith Urban as a BIG influence. Then we saw the 22 year- old from Charlotte, North Carolina Ashley Smith belting out Carrie Underwood’s “Cowboy Casanova” effortlessly. Both of these contestants are beyond impressive and will be fun to follow come Hollywood week!
Two other promising country guys also rolled through this week’s auditions. Baton Rouge firefighter Dustin Watts sang Garth Brook’s “She’s Every Woman” easily winning himself a golden ticket to Hollywood, while 22 year-old Paul Jolley from Tennessee most certainly made the judges smile with his version of the Rascal Flatt’s hit “I Won’t Let Go.”
20 year-old Summer Cunningham, a student from Georgia, came in and belted out a very country-sounding version of “Lean On Me.” However, when asked about her “style” of singing she wasn’t completely convinced she was going down the country road and then…. well…sparks flew! Whatever she or the judges decide there is no denying Summer can sing!
Lastly, let’s not forget 22 year-old Janelle Arthur. This girl can S-I-N-G! The Oliver Springs, TN fitness instructor decided to audition with Keith Urban’s “Where the Blacktop Ends” impressing all the judges, including Keith. She said she had been singing since she was 8 years old and had even met the great Dolly Parton along the way in her musical journey! Janelle is clearly ready for the Idol stage and will also be one to follow!
If you missed it, check out their auditions and let us know if you think one of these country contestants just might be the next “American Idol!”
