Yesterday, September 6th, Country Music Hall of Famer and Grand Ole Opry member Vince Gill was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the recording category. Fans and media lined Hollywood Blvd to watch as the man of the hour received this high honor. Just as Vince had always hoped for his star was placed in close proximity to that of his wife Amy Grant at 6901 Hollywood Blvd.
Right before the ceremony started Vince arrived along with his family including Amy Grant, oldest daughter Jenny Gill and her husband Josh Van Valkenburg. In true Vince fashion he stopped to take time to say hello to fans and sign autographs before taking his seat. The event kicked off with a brief introduction and background on Vince by the President of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. He talked about some of Vince’s many accolades as fans clapped and cheered to show their support.
First up to speak was Reba McEntire. It was mentioned at the ceremony that when Vince saw her earlier in the day he was surprised she was there. You could easily see in Vince’s expressions how moved he was she came to speak. Reba reminisced a bit about their long time friendship and shared how after the terrible tragedy of losing her band in a plane wreck Vince was one of the first to call and offer his support. Record producer Tony Brown was also on hand, and raved about Vince’s many talents and the friendship they have shared over the years. Amy Grant was up next and was deeply honored to be speaking about her husband. She told a story about Vince jamming for hours with someone backstage at the Opry who she did not recognize. When they finally left she eagerly asked about the mystery man’s identity and Vince just smiled saying, “I have no idea!” She said that’s one thing she loves about Vince, “He goes where the music takes him.”
All of the speakers had such an admiration for Vince, and when Vince got up to speak you quickly realized Vince had equal admiration for all of them. He thanked everyone for coming and was visibly touched by all the support he was given. He also said, “I look around and I am just so moved by the people who came.” With sincerity in his voice he mentioned how if he had a greatest accomplishment it would be the friends he has made throughout his life.
After his speech it was time to unveil the star. Vince crouched down on his hands and knees and was shown his brand new shiny star. I don’t know if star ceremonies usually have “themes” but I would say this one surely did. Respect, kindness and friendship were words I heard echoed throughout the event. Vince got this star for his high achievement in recording and his amazing talent, however it is a bonus that he is revered by so many of his peers. Congratulations Vince…well deserved!!
On a side note…a big shout out to Ana Martinez. She puts on these star ceremonies and it was done WELL and very organized. If you ever get a chance to see one it is a special event!!
