In what could be the biggest turtle story since the hare’s ill-timed nap, Blake Shelton has apologized for a poorly received Twitter joke.
“Does anyone know if the Eastern Box turtle is protected in Oklahoma?” he tweeted last week. “If so, I didn’t just swerve to the shoulder of the road to smash one.”
The post sparked a blast of negative response from those who weren’t aware that Shelton was on tour (and not driving) in North Dakota at the time of the tweet.
“Here’s what’s funny: knock-knock jokes,” Ellen DeGeneres replied. “Here’s what’s not funny: animal cruelty.”
Shelton has since tweeted evidence of his love for animals, including a picture of the Tishomingo Animal Hospital, which he supports along with wife Miranda Lambert.
“One more tweet about this stuff, and I’m done,” he posted Tuesday (7/31). “No doubt I made a bad joke, and for that I apologize. And one more thing, as a spokesperson for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife, I thought y’all should know the Eastern Box turtle doesn’t exist in Oklahoma.”
I for one hope everyone backs off. If Blake quits Twitter I am not sure what I would do!
