Colt Ford Makes Me Hungry for Some “Chicken and Biscuits”

On first look, a person might not know what to expect from Colt Ford’s new album “Chicken and Biscuits.” With track listings such as “Cricket On a Line,” “We Like to Hunt,” and “All about Y’all,” it’s hard to tell what you’re going to get. With Colt Ford, the answer is simple: these are songs about country living. The 16-track album takes you through all aspects of country life: family, friends, food, and love.

Being someone who was not familiar with Ford’s music before listening to this album, I was surprised to hear that Ford uses a sort of “spoken-word” country. It is reminiscent of the music of Cowboy Troy, but it does not seem like Ford has the intent of being another “rapper” in country music. The title track, “Chicken and Biscuits,” features guest vocals by James Otto and celebrates women by comparing them to a favorite dish for any country boy: chicken and biscuits. Kevin Fowler chimes in on the track “Hip Hop in a Honky Tonk,” which aims to let all the DJs out there know that hip hop music should never be heard in a honky tonk. Another standout track is “Tool Timer,” which features Darryl Worley and reminds us that having the ability to fix things and help other people is a wonderful thing, but it can be made even better with a special someone in our lives. Joe Nichols, Rhett Atkins, and Josh Gracin also make appearances on this album and make it even more diverse.

Overall, this is a fun album. Sometimes it’s nice to be able to listen to music that has an overall positive feel to it. So many times we take our lives and ourselves so seriously that we forget to appreciate the little things. This is what the overall feel of “Chicken and Biscuits” is about: don’t sweat the small stuff and appreciate what you have in life. If you want to listen to something that is fun and upbeat, this album is what will do the trick.
