Not Everyone Believes Country Music is All About Farms and Tractors

So all of the awards for the 45th Academy Music Awards have been given out. Some came out big winners and as always some were loosers. That’s the name of the game with awards shows, not everyone can win.

Looks like part of Gloriana was feeling the pinch of not being one of the winners. Tom Gossin took to his Twitter last night to express his extreme displease with loosing the Top New Artist award to Luke Bryan.

So friends- let’s break it down. Luke had a #1 song before we even started recording our album. New artist? Thoughts?

Listen- on the real- luke us a f-in great dude! He deserved that award. I just wish the noms were more realistic. He’s got 2 albums out!

Awards don’t mean shit in the long run.Our fans are the best in the world! We know what’s good and so do you guys and that’s all that matters

We need to keep country music progressing, not regressing. You can only say stuff about farms and tractors so many times before its lame.

We are artist trying to make art. If we were to just copy something someone already said, would that be art? We want to say something new!

I love all of you! No worries. Everything happens for a reason!

OUCH!  That stings a little bit.  I’m not sure if I would want to ask Tom what he thinks of someone like Eason Corbin who is just a little more country than that!

As of this morning Tom (about 7 minutes ago) was expressing apologizes for his remarks from last night saying that he was not hating on Luke Bryan.

Guys- for the record- I’m not hating on luke! He’s a friend of mine and he deserved that award! I’m just trying to keep everyone’s mind open.

So sorry if I came across as a sore loser! I don’t play music for awards- I play music because I love it more than anything!

You be the judge. Sound off and leave a comment. Tell us what you think about last night’s Top New Artist Award and the remarks that Tom made via Twitter.

There is room for all kinds of country. I am not sure I would consider them country at all…but what other genre could they fit in? & pretty much everything has already been said, every song that comes out now is sort of like one that has come before.

This is why Twitter is dangerous for artists…they say things before they really think it through.

I would however agree that Luke Bryan should not be considered for New Artist…

  2. Fiel says:

Mr. Thomas Gossin, whatever happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas, unless if it’s on Twitter. God speed!

  3. Val says:

I think it comments were out of line and he should never put them on twitter.

However, I do agree that Luke should not have been nominated for new artist and Lady A should not have had their first album nominated for Album of the Year since that album was released two years ago. I also think since Carrie didn’t tour for the majority of the year, that she should not have been eligible for ETOTY and I also think that the ETOTY Award should not be fan voted.

I do think it was a great show!

I agree on some points with Tom.

Twitter is a hit or miss. You say things all the time without really thinking them through, everyone does, not just music artists. So relate to him on that level.

  5. Tara says:

Luke’s 1st no. 1 was in Dec. 09…Gloriana’s cd came out in Aug 09…so no, he didn’t get a #1 before their cd was made. Gloriana fans spent the voting period on twitter and their fan website promoting cheating, and then expressed sour grapes when they didn’t win. Lots of awesome country artists weren’t even nominated, although they surely deserved some recognition as well.

  6. Adam says:

So putting out a pop album and calling it country isn’t lame? His band sucks and he can’t figure out why he didn’t win an award. So besides making bad music, he’s not very intelligent either. Music like Gloriana’s is killing the country format. Thankfully, Jamey Johnson is around for those of us that like actual country music!

By the way, I was not a Luke Bryan fan after his first album, but the second one is excellent. He deserved the award.

  7. Nicole says:

The reason Lady A had there first album nominated was because of sales in 2009. They had there biggest sales ever in that year..thats why it was consdiered.

I am disappointed in what Tom said about Luke. He was out of line and the group itself has started to become a one hit wonder in my opinion. I enjoy there album but they do a lot of talking that they shouldnt be doing.

  8. Danielle C says:

EVERYTHING happens for a REASON!! The PPL who WIN deserve to WIN…and there is NO USE complaing/talking crap/or whining about who actually took the AWARD!! Bc to me that just shows that you didn’t DESERVE it…nor were as GRATEFUL..for the opportunity to be nominated..let alone WIN!! So everybody..just APPRECIATE Coun…try Music!! and they all are AMAZING matter if they are nominated/win or NOT!!

  9. Dave says:

The message is probably true. These “new artist” awards never seem to have new artists in them. However, there are better more diplomatic ways to go about it. Posting those words moments after you lost, just deludes the message and makes you seem like a whiner.

Whatever happened to being gracious in defeat?

  10. Jessica says:

Sounds like someone is being a sore loser (and winner)…can’t you just be happy for Luke and get over it? He had the biggest year of his short career last year and deserved that award more than anyone. Plus, the fans voted and gave the award to who they thought should win it…without bribery like the Gloriana fans did. Also, aren’t the songs about farms and tractors the ones that generally have huge success? (She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy, John Deere Green, Big Green Tractor, etc). I think someone needs to think about what they are saying before posting it.

  11. Heather says:

    Major foot in mouth…

I don’t understand why he is so sour about losing this award anyway. Gloriana still walked away as winners. They won an ACM in order to get nominated for that round.

Tom was WAY out of line making those comments and the fact that he deleted them makes him out to be an even bigger coward. You can’t just go bashing someone and make it all okay by hitting ‘delete.’

“If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all!”

  12. Heather says:

Also, Tom deleted some more of his comments… Those apologizing to Luke. Now it says:

“I love music. I love great ideas. I love originality. I love our friend Luke! Please don’t twist what I’m saying guys- nothin but love here!”

  13. megan says:

Okay, first, Im am very excited for Luke. He deserved to be recognized and Im sad that this ‘artist’ decided to try and ruin it for him. Secondly, I find if VERY OFFENSIVE that he attacked the type of music that Luke sings. Luke is true to himself and there are clearly many fans of country that listen to his ‘type’ of farm/tractor country. His remarks reflect poorly on country. Gloriana is only famous as the group that opens for TS…they have not had success, in fact, Im not even sure if there last 2 singles even made it into the top 40. I hope that Tom is not a friend of Lukes because even though he says he is not bashing him, he clearly is. There is no way to take his comments out of context. I hope ppl realize how this group really is, in that they feel entitled to something. It just makes me sick

  14. Steven says:

I can understand where he is coming from..Sometimes i wonder if some how the awards isnt “rigged”..Carrie Underwood won, is it cause shes getting married soon, is it cause Taylor always wins? The only group that i loved seeing win was “LADY A”..Country Awards arent like they used to be…It used to be all about the songs..Now its like whos the most popular or who wants to be popular again..Should be called Country Music Pageant..

  15. Heather says:

Country awards have never been truly about the songs/ talent. There have always been politics/ money involved on some level or another, unfortunately.

  16. Kristi says:

This is such BS. I have been a Gloriana fan from the beginning, but I couldn’t disagree with him more. Luke DID deserve to win. Can’t you be nominated for New Artist twice? We’ll see what Tom has to say next year if they get nominated and win…I’m sure he wouldn’t have a problem with it then.

  17. Alison says:

I was not a fan of Gloriana before this and now I really am not a fan..if they happen to be at a concert Im going to I will walk out on their set…… and Mr. Tom lets play a game called before you go on a bashing rant you check your facts. Cause now you look like a sore loser who is an idiot and doesnt know diddly squat. Gloriana’s cd came out months before Luke had a number one….and if you notice the ACM’s always have people that have been around for a while but just recently had success in the charts nominated, maybe instead of complaining you should be grateful that the ACM’s actually noticed you early in your career…but after bashing them Im sure that’s the last time you get noticed.

  18. K says:

Although this guy sounds bitter, I can see where he’s coming from to an extent.

Luke ISN’T a new artist, and he’s had two albums and a lot of radio success. Kind of like Darius Rucker winning “new artist” when’s he’s had a clear advantage getting his name out there as a pop artist for 20 years.

But, at the same time, the comments could’ve at least been a litttle more gracious. He has a right to feel that way, but to come off so rudely and post it for the world to see just lacks class. It wouldn’t be surprising to me if Gloriana wasn’t jealous of Luke, simply because they haven’t had much success in the country format, which probably hurts even more considering they have been the opening act for the biggest sensation in music for the past year.

I never considered them a country band, and I certainly don’t like them now. These comments probably ruined the little chance they had left at success in the format.

  19. Sami says:

I am not a fan and think their comments are in poor taste. I saw them on the orange carpet and they acted arrogant and bragging that Taylor Swift had the ETOTY award “in the bag” and they were not worried about it. What arrogance!!!!!!!!!! Carrie did quite a few concerts last year that were for charity or the troops, concerts overseas, and did lots and lots of appearances on the Grand Ole Opry, Tv appearances, guest spot on How I met Your Mother, Sang the national anthem at the SB (millions of viewers worldwide), sang on CNN Heroes (millions of viewers world wide) her own TV special (over 8 million 1st airing and over 4 1/2 million on re-air),guest on Faith Hill Special, inducted into the Oklahoma Hall Of Fame, Won the Harmony award along with a grammy & people’s choice award, the tribute to Michael jackson—and so many other things. So if you add up the millions of fans that watched Carrie virsus touring–she came out way ahead of any touring artist. Say what you want—but this girl DID DESERVE TO WIN ETOTY. I am also happy that Luke, Miranda, Trace, Brad, Blake, Brooks & Dunn, etc. won. COUNTRY WON LAST NIGHT and I am pleased the the ACM’s recognized them. Fans did not win the award for Carrie–the majority of votes were from the ACM’s.

  20. Lynn says:

It’s all lame. What the hell is the point of the awards anyway, to pat themselves on the back? There is so much more talent out there than what you saw last night. People are playing down on Broadway or even the street in Nashville who have more talent than the majority of the people in that room. Fan voted awards are even more lame.
Whats wrong with what Tom said? Nothing it’s his opinion, it’s how he felt in the moment, you dont like tough shit deal with it. I dont like what a lot of people say, but that’s life. If we all said the same thing, and we all blew smoke up eachothers ass it’d be pretty boring around here.

  21. Elise says:

The Gloriana band member didn’t say anything that a lot of people (including myself) hadn’t already been thinking. Luke has two albums out; does he still qualify as a new artist? I don’t know the answer to that. I tend to think the nominations are whoever the nominations are. The band member was making a legitimate observation. But the timing and tone of his comments were unfortunate. Raise the question at the time nominations are first announced; after the winner is announced, it is going to sound like sour grapes no matter what the intent. Or wait until after the excitement of the awards show has died down, and raise the question in a more general and neutral context of how nominees should be chosen/what the rules should be for various categories in award shows, etc. There was no need to name Luke or single him out. And if Luke was used as an example, it should have been done neutrally, with no references to his music (which is not the point anyway).

That said, you know what? Life is too short. Luke and Gloriana (and the fans of both) need to let it blow over.
