The Story Behind the Lyrics:

David Lee and I write together all the time. About 6 months before we started “Mama’s Hot”, I had written what we songwriters call “a terd”, titled “Mama Sealed the Deal”. Same concept, under par. I knew this was a good idea to tackle this idea with David Lee. He and I laugh at the same stuff, and this funny fact of life got us tickled as two pickles on a “Cheeseburger in Paradise”. I suggested it be one of those bluesy, soulful, free songs that start slow, then kick into an anthem-ish, sing songy, feel. David Lee bit the hook, “Mama’s Hot”, and we penned what is currently one of my biggest crowd pleasers.

Mama’s Hot took us about two and a half sessions to complete. The general outline came really easy but we were super duper careful. We knew every line in this song counted, because this song has a lot of space in it, so we wrote and rewrote till we both agreed we had done the idea justice. I remember one argument we had was about “call me Eager Eddy cause I’m ready to tie the knot”. We just couldn’t decide whether that was corny or cool. Now that I hear it on the record I’m diggin’ “Eager Eddy”. He definitely goes with the tongue and cheek mood of the song.

While writing this tune, we wanted to make sure first time listeners wondered long and hard what “Mama” looked like then, beat them to death with “Mama’s Hot”. Also, we intentionally wrote it just like a good ole boy might tell the story to one of his buddies. I know first hand, from singing this one at the Bluebird, we did just that. People hang on to every word until I sing “Mama’s Hot” the first time. Then, they’re trying to hang on to the beer spraying out of their noses, because they’re laughing so hard. The song is about as much fun to sing, as it was to write.

“Mama’s Hot” is the warm easy truth. I don’t remember the specific conversation I had with my Dad regarding mother in-laws but I’m positive that at one time or another he mentioned the importance of making sure she’s what you wouldn’t mind looking at down the road. Well, you could say I took his advice like the Lords Supper. My mother in-law is a fire hazard. Not only is she smoking, she’s cool as a cucumber on Santa’s subway sandwich. “Mama’s Hot” always goes out to my mother in-law, Mrs. P.
