Beautiful lead vocals and harmonies, traditional-sounding country guitars and mandolin and a touch of twang make for some sweet, sweet music by the sibling trio The Harters. Michael, Scott and Leslie bring many different musical styles to the band but the final product is unique and distinctively country.
Every song on the EP “Family. Love. Harmony.” is a delight. “Jenny,” the new single, is a tale of boy meets girl and love overcomes all obstacles, and Leslie’s vocals are pure and clear. When the brothers come in for harmony on the refrain, it paints a perfect picture. They don’t tell you what choice Jenny makes, but you just know she’ll follow her heart.
“Getting’ Out of Dodge” is haunting vocally and musically, with clever lyrics and again, amazing harmonies. These siblings were born to sing together – literally!
I particularly like “Why I Cry,” where the brothers vocals are the voice of reason to Leslie’s reminiscence of the good times with a bad lover.
“Dancin’ on the Moon” offers more of the same great harmonies, except with the boys taking the lead vocally while Leslie offers up the harmonies and background vocals. And “I Owe You” is vocal showcase for each member individually and as a group, with harmonies and lead vocals wrapped in a simple guitar melody. Simple, beautiful music stripped to the basic of words and music with nothing extra to get in the way.
The Harters, each a talented singer and musician in their own right, truly prove the old saying that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
