I said a few weeks ago I wasn’t happy with the single switch that RCA Nashville pulled on Danny Gokey’s upcoming release. I am still standing my by statement that “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me” kinda sounds like everything else on the radio right now. Personally, I feel “It’s Only” shows us a lot more of Danny’s talent, range and personality that we all got to know on American Idol.
In fairness of showing all side of the story it looks like a lot of other people don’t seem to feel the same way.
Jimmy Carter posted this on his facebook page last night:
My new favorite song…heard it LIVE tonight! “My Best Days Are Ahead Of Me”
And Danny Twittered today:
My song “My best days are ahead of me” had the 2nd most adds to country radio yesterday- only behind Carrie Underwoods “temporary home” Yay!
Not to mention all the bashing I received from my last post about Danny Gokey tells me that he is coming into country music with a built in fan base that will support him no matter what.

I also loved “It’s Only” and feel that is showcases Danny’s vocal strength and range better, however I also love “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me” . They are both great! Can’t wait for the album.
I definitely like It’s Only better! The melody is wayyyy better. I feel like My Best Days Are Ahead of Me is too cliche, there’s nothing that separates it. And coming from AI and into country music you have to have something that will catch attention. Country fans are the hardest to break into.
You can bet that we have his back no matter what! <3 Danny!
I love both songs but I do think that My Best Days Are Ahead of Me will do better on radio. I am hoping that Tiny Life written by Jeffrey Steele is Danny’s second single. Also, Danny debuted at #55 on the Billboard hot country charts. Way to go Danny!!! Your fans love you.
I also like both songs. My Best Days is a nice uptempo song, fun to listen to and a nice choice for live performances. Danny Gokey was known a lot for his ballads on AI, but he was also one of the few singers who could really commit and sell an uptempo song consistently. So far, I’m really pleased with the range of the songs for his album. Some show the full reach of his vocal abilities more fully than others, but they are all very enjoyable and make good use of that soulful raspy tone that is unique to Danny Gokey.
Lol, country girl, didn’t see any bashing last time, but lots of peeps disagreed with you!
I agree that Its Only def. showcases Danny’s vocal ability more; its a difficult song to sing and he nails it perfectly.
But I understand the labels decision to go with an upbeat song first; and this one def. sounds kick up your feet country. I love both songs equally for different reasons. I think its going to be a great, versatile album.
I don’t think Best Days sounds generic in the least. How can any song sound “like everything else out there right now” with Danny’s voice? Seriously, the guy has a very unique, raspy full tone that sounds good soft or loud and that will set him apart no matter what he sings.
I love Its Only (it continues to get lots of hits at utube) but do agree with RCA decision to front Best Days; I think its a great, fun first single and thats the Danny that is the primary Danny- an optimistic, happy go lucky guy.
You are right in that “It’s only” has more meat and shows off Danny’s vocals more, but I also love “My Best Days are Ahead of Me.”" At 69 that songs gives me a lot of hope. I’m a country music or maybe Christian listener, but I love Danny Gokey the man, and the singer, andI will buy whatever he sings! I can’t wait for his album so I can listen to him all day, if I want.
While I really like Its Only, I think that My Best Days is much more marketable and will appeal to a broader audience. You are very correct about his fan base. We have stood by and watched the other idols in the spotlight, taken our licks with the internet hate. It’s our turn now. We really do have his back.
I have heard 4 of Danny’s new songs and they are all great. He is going to have a fantastic cd. I agree “It’s Only” shows off his amazing vocals, but I guess RCA/Nashville thought “My Best Days” would get more airplay. I hope they eventually will release “It’s Only” to radio, it is a beautiful song with a much needed message. I am a huge fan and will support anything Danny does.
I saw Danny performing live at Coyote Joe’s in NC last Weds. Wow, he is even better in person than you’d expect, and I had very high expectations after seeing him on AI and on the AI tour show. On the question about My Best Days and It’s Only, I do still like them both. I came away from the live show though with a better appreciation of My Best Days for using Danny’s vocal strengths. It was a better platform for that than I had previously realized once I saw it live. He does quite a bit with the vocals in delivering the song, and it’s a good use of that great raspy / growly edge Danny’s sound often has.
