Carrie Underwood is a Sci-Fi Junkie

No, you’re not going to find any video clips…or anything…yet…but on Carrie Underwood’s CMT: Invitation Only you get a rare glimpse into the Carrie underneath the beauty.  Because I’m a Dish Network subscriber, I get to see each episode of Invitation Onlybefore it airs on CMT (see channel 101 dish fans). Well, during the question and answer session, Carrie admits her favorite movies are the ‘Alien’ movies…she also says she’s a hardcore ‘Trekie,’ as in…Star Trek…Apparently, Carrie thinks Captain Kirk is quite the looker…Go ahead and swoon all you closeted sci-fi geeks…you’ve got on popular blond in your corner. You can now wear your Spock shirts with pride.

Carrie debuts a few new songs, along with her past hits.  I have to say, people need to lay off Taylor Swift for being too ‘pop’ cuz some of the stuff Carrie sings on the show are definitely more pop than country…just sayin…It’s not a bad thing…  Pick on one-pick on all.  So add Carrie to the list of country artists (Keith, Rascal Flatts, Taylor, Martina) who could go ‘pop.’

Carrie’s CMT: Invitation Only premiers on Tuesday, December 1st on CMT. Click here for more information.

Everything ya’ll seem to write seems to cut Carrie down in one point or another…exactly WHY I dont follow yall anymore

  2. TawnyTucker says:

hmmm…what the heck are you talking about?! There is nothing cutting carrie down…it’s a simple fact. Sometimes I think y’all here someone say something on the negative side about someone once, and that sets your general undertone forever. SEriously…she’s pretty and she can sing…everything else I said in the post was simply fact. Don’t like it, take it up with Carrie.

  3. flutters says:

*shrugs* Undo It is bluesy country rock. Mama’s Song is a rolling country folk song. Cowboy Casanova is bluesy rock with a honkytonk flavor. Temporary Home is country pop song.

So Tawny I think the problem here is your definition of “fact”. I don’t hear any of Carrie’s new songs on Invitation Only as being more pop than country. But when you declare that to be fact you come off like you’re trying to cut her down and your attitude about her in the past of course figures into that. You just don’t seem willing to extend any kind of consideration Carrie’s way and you seem awfully willing to just jump to a conclusion like you know something even though it’s just your opinion.

  4. TawnyTucker says:

But she’s got plenty of pop…she’s certianly not just country…harldy anyone is now days…they play plenty of carrie on adult contemporary stations…along with taylor, keith, and martina….she’s got plenty of songs that could swing both ways, and if you heard it on a pop station, you wouldn’t be like “whoa, that’s too country.’ Carrie’s country but she’s also pop…Hell, so are Rascal Flatts…no need to start a fight. When it comes to carrie, I could say ‘the pretty blond’ and I”d still get pounded for putting her down…She’s pretty, she can sing, she apparently likes sci-fi, and she’s definitly got some pop in her, and many of her songs would be more suitable for pop radio than country…FACT. I didn’t put Carrie down…I was just saying, funny how people go off on Taylor for being pop, when both her and Carrie and many other country acts could just as easily follow suit…

  5. anon says:

Are we forgetting that Carrie CAN sing and she doesn’t REMIX her songs to fit the pop genre. They are what they are, take it or leave it.

  6. TawnyTucker says:

anon i didn’t say Carrie couldn’t sing…in fact she can…and I’m not discussing the vocal ability…the truth is…Carrie could probably get a pop hit out of Play On without any remix…Much like Rascal Flatts with Life is a Highway

  7. K says:

In Twany’s defense, I dont think she said anything bad about Carrie, or at the very least, she didn’t say anything that hasn’t been vocalized by others (George Jones, anyone?) Twany was simply stating an opinion, and I see nothing wrong with that. The majority of country artists including Carrie, Keith, Taylor, Rascal Flatts, Lady A and 99% of all other country artists get cut down for the same thing everyday, and no one should expect Carrie to be “exempt from that. She is criticized like other artist on the planet. That being said though, I don’t think there was ANY need to bring Taylor into this. Both artists have very different goals, artistic visions and personalities. I think most people would agrue that Taylor is openly more pop than country, anyway. She’s the one who remies her songs and albums, gets them played on different formats, and her own label said she was “more Avril Lavingne than a country artist.” C’mon, seriously? I don’t think Carrie’s sound on “Play On” is compromised at all, and she makes it very clear that she knows she is a country-pop artist. She may not be tarditional, but Carrie knows what kind of artist she wants to be and she doesn’t stray from it. I don’t disrespect Taylor or her talent, but am more willing to trust and follow an artist who respects the legends, yet stays true to her own sound, than someone who clearly doesn’t know what type of artist she is and says she is a country artists because “country songs tell and story” and so does she. Really?

  8. flutters says:

“She’s pretty, she can sing, she apparently likes sci-fi, and she’s definitly got some pop in her…FACT.”

If you’d said it that way in the first place then there would’ve been less of a problem. Instead you chose the antagonistic route and acted like anyone who thinks Taylor is too pop but not Carrie is a hypocrite because according to you it’s a “fact” that some of Carrie’s new songs are more pop than country. It’s like you were incapable of accepting any debate on it which just makes you sound stubborn.

I mean how would you like it if I’d said “Man Tawny needs to lay off Carrie for the personality thing because Carrie’s got a great sense of humor….FACT”. Would it make you any more likely to want to talk to me if I talked down to you that way? Because that’s what you did – I used the same basic words you did on a different subject.

Anyways…Mama’s Song is definitely too country for pop (soundwise and also messagewise) and Temporary Home wouldn’t fly on pop either (Christian radio maybe). Undo It could conceivably cross over but not because it’s more pop than country – country and blues have always been closely tied together and that song builds on that – it sounds a lot like Flat On The Floor and Before He Cheats IMO. Cowboy Casanova’s also got the blues feel but the production is more rock with fiddle and steel. There is nothing on pop radio that sounds like Cowboy Casanova right now.

For the record Carrie is so obviously country to me because of her vocalizations. The production on her songs varies in how country it is but the way Carrie sings her ballads is in the tradition of the great ladies of country music with the country cry, sometimes with the twang, the way she uses her head voice, and so on and so forth. Hillary Scott’s also got a pretty country voice no matter how pop Lady Antebellum’s songs are. But Taylor not so much – she’s got no cry, her twang sounds like Avril Lavigne, and her style is really folk pop. Nothing wrong with that at all but I’m just illustrating the distinctions I hear.

  9. TawnyTucker says:

Thanks K! For some reason, I can say things about every artist except Carrie cuz then I get beat down…The only reason I brought Taylor into it is everyone goes nuts that she’s crossed over into pop…well Carrie and half of country music could probably do the same thing…However, if I throw Carrie into the equation well…how dare I. LOL Cracks me up for real!

  10. TawnyTucker says:

Please note…I said “some of the stuff Carrie sings on the show are definitely more pop than country” not ALL…in fact…my husband came in the room while the show was on and said, what are you watching…it’s certainly not CMT…and I was like, oh, but it is…its Carrie Underwood. Do I think Carrie is MORE country than pop…hell yes…but she definitly could cross over without much trouble…NOt everything on pop radio is Black Eyed Peas. There is plenty on pop with a message. I’m not stating it as a negative…just stating a fact some of Carrie’s stuff is more pop. The ONLY reason people assume it was negative is because I mentioned Taylor’s name in the post, and that’s just not the case.

  11. flutters says:

“I’m not stating it as a negative…just stating a fact some of Carrie’s stuff is more pop. The ONLY reason people assume it was negative is because I mentioned Taylor’s name in the post, and that’s just not the case.”

You keep missing the point. It’s your OPINION that some of Carrie’s stuff is more pop. I disagree and yet I’m not acting like it’s a fact that all of Carrie’s songs are more country because I know better than to act like my opinion is a fact.

It’s because you don’t see the difference between stating something as a fact and an opinion that you’re coming off as antagonistic. And please stop assuming that your mentioning Taylor’s name had anything to do with it in my case. You seem awfully eager to put people (Carrie fans in particular) down for having a different opinion than yours Tawny and maybe you should consider that that might be why you get the responses you do.

  12. K says:

I think it’s sort of jumping the gun to try and say EVERY song by Carrie, Taylor, or even Rascal Flatts, would do well at pop radio. Just because these artists may have some pop influence in them does not mean every song of theirs would do well crossing over, and therefore, it isn’t country. “My Wish” was sent to an all-genre station, and although it did fairly well for awhile, it pretty much was deemed by the listners as “a good song” but I actually heard one listner say she “didn’t think it belonged” on that particular station. The same thing could be said in reverse with the Eagles. They are purely a pop band, yet they sent a song to country radio and it bombed on the charts. Jessica Simpson tried a country album as a purely pop artist and it bombed as well. Yet Darius Rucker was lead singer of an 80″s pop band, and he has done exteremley well in the country format. You really can’t judge how well an artist or a particular song will do in another market, because you really don’t know. Also, Twany, I am confused why you brought “Life Is A Highway” into the disscussion? The song has ALWAYS been known as an 80′s pop classic; that’s about the worst example you could use in the “country gone pop” debate. If anything, I hear more complaints that artists who have a pop-influenced sound to country fans sound “too country” to those who favor pop stations or artists like Lady Gaga, Pink, and Rihannah.

  13. TawnyTucker says:

oh…so it’s an opionon that some of carrie’s songs are more pop than country? Oh…so if I delete the word fact…it’s all better? Even though, i do think it’s a fact that some of Carrie’s songs lean toward more pop and it’s also a fact that some of her songs are 100% pure country….but that’s also an opionion…so it’s the word fact that’s getting you bent out of shape? You do realize that this has nothing to do with Carrie Fans…or non-Carrie Fans…I’m a fan of Carrie’s music…just not a HUGE fan of Carrie…but trust me…that has nothing to do with it…I was actually pleased that she was the most personable I’ve seen her on the Invitation Only…I wish she could be like that more often… But that’s besides the point…since this is all in fact, about the use of the word, fact…Oh dear…I’m really laughin….this is too much. You use a figure of speech and people jump down your throat…I’m willin to bet we’d still be having this conversation if the word FACT was deleted….I’m also could give a crap if people have a different opinoin…I”m just stating that people immediately start going off on me when i say ANYTHING about Carrie at all…even if it’s true they jump all over me. It’s very funny. It’s happened during every post…and several of them had NO opionion in them at all…just raw facts straight from Carries mouth and people jump all over me. It’s funny. but i’ll make it all better and delete the word fact….

  14. TawnyTucker says:

K- I feel ya..I don’t think every artist that has crossed over can make a pop hit out of every song…just saying, they all have plenty of songs on their albums that if they choose to release them could do well on pop radio…that’s all…Much like many pop songs can cross over to country…Because generally, each song has a more pop or country undertone…

  15. TawnyTucker says:

You all can rest your heads…I apologize for using the word fact…Aparently it’s only my opinion that Carrie has some songs that are more pop than country….so the word FACT has been removed. Rest easy tattle tales…all is right with the world…next agenda…world peace.

  16. flutters says:

Thank you Tawny although I do wish you could have shown more grace and less derision in your responses to comments. Your revision is a much better expression of your opinion and makes you sound reasonable (but there’s a typo on Flatts).

  17. RainHNg says:

The problem is TS should become a songwriter, not a singer, and definitely not country singer

  18. anon says:

Hey Tawny regarding your next agenda…world piece, quite honestly had you not mentioned the Taylor part I think we would have been ok…there would have been piece but I believe you got the responses you did because of throwing in the whole Taylor pop thing into the mix. I responded only to this post because of the whole Taylor thing. Can you agree with my earlier response when I noted that Taylor remixes EVERY song for pop radio? I would look at her differently if she just lets her songs cross over as is. However when you look at Carrie’s music, she does not alter it…it is what it is. Since you already saw the DISH performance what did you think of Temporary Home? Here’s a real test because most people don’t get the true meaning of the song…can you please respond back as I would like to hear what your interpretation of the song is?

  19. Sami says:

Carrie said that the album “Play On” has something in for everyone. It is very versitile. One thing I like about Carrie is that she refuses to remix her songs for pop. If they cross over into pop–fine–if they don’t that is ok also. Taylor has remixed most of her songs for pop–and she does NOT sound country at all. Their fans love them as they are. I really don’t know why Carrie is compared with Taylor at all. They are nothing alike. The girls are friends and support each other. Shame on everyone who tries to cause conflict between them and their fans.

  20. todayonly says:

Actually, Carrie is more of a fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation and thinks Captain Picard is hot.  Also, the whole Carrie/Taylor debate is pretty pointless.  People like them for different reasons.  I am a fan of the voice, so Carrie appeals much more to me.  Singers who need help in the studio, then either lip syncs or just sounds bad live just don’t interest me. As far as personality, some like the over bubbly, OMG, that’s totally awesome type personality. For me again, Carrie fits the bill because I love a quick wit and dry sense of humor and she has that in spades.  I remember Blake Sheldon once saying he loves to listen to Carrie’s interviews because she has that Oklahoma humor. He sees the humor that is just totally  lost on others.   People should just like what you like.  And it really isn’t a secret that this site is a bit biased against Carrie.  But that’s ok.  It is you site.  If you are trying to be fair and balanced, you are accomplishing that about as well as the cable news networks. :)

  21. Marcus says:

The big difference is that Carrie can sing, Taylor can not sing. Every award that has ever been given in music history has been cheapened by giving Taylor Swift a vocalist award. Those awards no longer have any meaning whatsoever. The CMA jumped the shark, I doubt they will be around next year. The CMA is no longer relevant.
